Yesterday in Arena I beat an UB God-Pharaoh's Gift + Scarab God deck with my no-mythics only-starting-rares UR Drake control deck.
The turning point was a counter war over a Crook of Condemnation.
My opponent conceded when I Cancelled the second of back-to-back Golden Demises with which he was trying to kill my two 12/4 (and growing) Enigma Drakes.
In a different match, I beat an Esper Embalm Tokens player (a pretty horrible matchup, and the reason I'm playing the Crooks to start with) with a sequence of Lightning Strike + Lightning Strike + Opt + Opt + Hyeroglyphic Illumination + swing with a 7/7 Bloodwater Entity for 13 damage outta nowhere, with 3 cards left in my library.
I had never really been much of a blue control player, but now I feel all warm and tingly inside.
I mean, I lose more than I win with this deck, but the wins are SO SATISFYING and the losses are so well fought.
(I'm not fully lost; I haven't grown to like control mirrors yet)

Magic Arena musings, day 2:
I've been cured of my control malaise by the fact that No Banlist Ramunap Red is one hell of a deck.

I actually bought a key for 5 bucks >_>
Played a couple hours and originally I was enjoying myself but then I stopped playing fellow noobs and playing all these r/b people as W/B vampire token aggro o_ o;;

I shoulda just went mono red i guess....
The Hall of Selected Cruor Praise
The good thing with mono red is games are short, so you can grind fast.

Hey, y'all! Im happy to se a MtG thread here. I mainly play a Golgari deck, getting things into graveyards and rolling out things like Lord of Extinction. I need to play with it a bit more to work out the kinks, but I have fun playing it.

Also, aldeayeah, I share your opinion on explosions.
Welcome to the fold, sneakyarrow!
Where I got the explosion thing from.

Does anyone have ideas for creating a new boon cycle (1 mana instants in each colour that involve 3 of something) that would be balanced around Lightning Bolt? I'm trying to create custom cards for a draft set and would like to include a cycle around Lughtning Bolt to have some powerful cards that aren't totally degenerate.
That depends a lot on what the draft environment ends up looking like. Assuming a fairly high power level (since you're putting in Lightning Bolt), these could be fine:
White: Swords to Plowshares, except it always has the player gain 3 life.
Black: Dark Ritual.
Blue: Brainstorm.
Green: Blossoming Defense, except it gives +3/+3.

Heh. 3 life swords was one of the first things I thought of (along with giant growth with split-secomd, since apparently that's close to how the spell used to be).
My idea was that the format would be Modern-ish? Bolt is legal in modern and all that.
I should have mentioned, the custom boon cycle is restricted to mono-colour decks to give incentive/reward to mono colour in the draft, that's why I'm using such a powerful cycle. It won't be that everyone splashes red for Bolt.
It didn't quite have Split Second, it's just that in 4th edition rules there were no SBA checks for lethal damage until the stack (batch) was empty, so a Giant Growth could always save a creature from damage.
The idea behind Giant Growth+Hexproof was to make it able to counter not only Bolt, but the pseudo-Swords as well.

I'm going to a new store for this prerelease! It's a bit farther away (a 10 minute drive rather than a 10 minute walk), but some old friends are regulars in this one so I hope I'llcrush the lot of them with implausibly knighted frogsblend in just fine.

My pool sucked! I built a grindy GWb deck which managed to get me killed in awesome ways, like a kicked Fight with Fire to the face, or Helm of the Host on a a 5/5 trample.
I regret nothing.
also, holy lack of removal Lyco
...Was it just my impression or is blue just super strong?
