Yatzil Velasquez Ximal: So awesome! The character, the story, the Magecraft, it all comes together fantastically to create something supremely engaging and deeply interesting! I certainly hope that this isn't he last DcaS Contest, but whether it is or it isn't, this is an absolute banger! Great job!

If there are only 2 sheets tomorrow when the contest portion ends, we'll have a 2 week extension.

Character:On the surface, a meek gentleman with little in the way of a spine. At his core, a true “gambler” who embodies the [fake risk-taking] inherent to the American West and Las Vegas.
The spirit of pretending fairness while already knowing the situation is rigged in your favor.
Naturally observant, with a penchant not for reading people, but rather the situations people find themselves in - and through those situations, the people.
If someone is too far into their cups, lead them to the craps table.
If someone is high on a winning streak, lead them to the slot machines.
If someone is overconfident, send them to your best dealer.
    And always load the dice.

    Biography:
The heir to the House family of mages. Based in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Houses quickly entrenched themselves in the Casino, Gambling, and Crime culture of the area.
While typically members of the family are blessed with phenomenal [Luck], Ryan possesses the opposite. In fact, he seemed to possess the opposite.
Of course, being unlucky is no excuse for failing in Vegas, so his parents put him hard to work preparing the run the Casino anyway…
Both the one aboveground, and the one below.
Above ground, there were craps tables, poker, and slots.
Below ground, there were craps, poker, slots, and brawls.
Mages could fight and other mages would bet on the result.
It was all highly illegal, but the profits were good.
And of course, if the bets were too juicy for one side…well, no one was above rigging matches in Vegas.
Above ground, below ground, and in the streets, Ryan cultivated the image of a do-nothing punk. The kind who slinked around the “lower-cost” parts of the city and made friends there.
Unbeknownst to even his family, however, this was Ryan laying the seeds of his own information network, building his own “house”.
Because if one is always unlucky, that means one variable is always known.
If something is sure to go wrong, than something is sure to happen.
If Ryan wanted to roll at the craps table, he would get snake eyes.
If he wanted to send his parents on a vacation to Cancun, their plane would crash.
Why would he do something like that?
Well, let’s say that his parents were considering going legit.
Let’s say that they even invited a representative from the Clocktower over, to consider divesting their fortune into something more conducive to mage society as a whole.
Now let’s say where the money was going was not as profitable as the Casino.
And, it should go without saying that “going legit” would mean completely scrubbing the “mage exclusive” parts of the Casino.
Which would be even more unprofitable.
And let’s say that Ryan’s network of “friends” - people you would never expect, delivered this information to him.
Well, there would only be one option for someone raised to rig and win every situation, no?
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sin City is what they call Las Vegas.
Ryan calls it the most honest city in the world.
Not to each other, obviously, but to oneself.
Because in a world where you have everything to gain and everything to lose.
You don’t have any time to pretend you’re above the grime, above backstabbing, above manipulation, above the sins of the city.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course, Ryan could not know the depths of his family’s contacts in the Clocktower.
They were immensely secretive about it, as one is in this landscape.
And there are parties at the Clocktower very invested in the House family fortune.
Paties who would answer the adage of “The House Always Wins” with “Blow Up the House”, if only they were given an excuse to.
    And well
Everything always goes wrong for Ryan, doesn’t it?

    Magecraft Related Abilities:

    Fortune Magecraft (Reversed)
    Magecraft that affects probability.
It can be used to increase the chances of a probable result, although it can never guarantee anything to one hundred. You can use a day’s supply of magical energy and still not guarantee a 6 when you call high roll.

For Ryan, this magecraft has turned into a curse and been completely reverse. Rather than maxing out at a 65% chance of forcing the desired outcome for the user, Ryan’s “curse” creates a 99% chance of the worst outcome possible happening.

Since his curse is also his magecraft, Ryan is, in effect, constantly using magical energy, leaving him unable to properly practice other forms of magecraft.
Ryan’s magical crest and magecraft are more of a curse than a blessing to him, but in a world dominated by chance…perhaps it is more useful than not to be able to count on a near-guranteed outcome.

    Creater Remarks
    Creator Remarks:

    • I am not making another mage again until I finish Mahoyo.
    • But ever since I saw the prompt “American Las Vegas Luck Mage” grew in my head
    • So figured something was better than nothing, the first step is always the hardest, yada yada.
    • So here’s Ryan.

Ryan House: Not bad, not bad at all! Definitely a little on the simple side, and there are definitely some rough edges, but overall it's a solid concept that's been executed pretty well. Good job for a first attempt, and I'm eager to see how your Magus sheets improve over time!

    What is a nation ?

An entity that gathers populations of individuals sharing a
    common sense
    culture
    .

For as long as the concept of nation has lived upon the surface of the World, it has been a core component of many's Thaumaturgies.

    As
    rituals
    traditions
    and
    common sense
    culture
became shared between similarly-minded people, they formed a
    foundation
    nation
    .

    As a
    foundation's
    nation's
    authority
    hegemony
    wanes, eventually so does its
    rituals
    traditions
    and
    common sense
    culture
    .

The purpose of a foundation is to be the base upon which building occurs.

    When a country dies, its
    authority
    hegemony
    vanishes.

    But only when a
    foundation
    nation
    dies does its
    rituals
    traditions
    and
    common sense
    culture
become forgotten things of the past.

Nah it's just that I started writing that, and realized it didn't actually have anything to really do with my entry other than the shared nationalism theme.

"Prenez place, mesdames et messieurs, le concert va commencer !"

    Onde Cécile Sternweber de Chantecoq

Alias: The Solo Conductor, Le Maestro Silencieux Magecraft: Musical magecraft, Wave magecraft
Date of birth: Nov 22nd, 27 Years Ago Origin: Wave
    Height/Weight: 166cm/52kg Attribute: Harmony
Country of origin: France Element: Water
Affiliation: Department of Creation Circuit Quantity: B+
Rank: Brand (officially Pride) Circuit Quality: A
Day of decisive battle: The reverberation of the universe Circuit Composition: Normal (evenly spread)

    Adagio e Tranquillo

As beings with their own agendas and world views, many old magi clans have seen the rise and fall of empires. Perceiving themselves as privileged due to their right to enact Mysteries, a number of them faced repercussions as they were too out of touch to understand that the world was changing. Such would have been the fate of the Sternweber de Chantecoq family, an old French and Austrian lineage of magi that have been in good relations with the Valualeta family for centuries since they joined the Clock Tower and enlisted in the Department of Creation. Although they were members of the Democratic Faction due to sharing the same views on art and talent as other members of that faculty, the same couldn't be said of their outlook on human society as a whole, where they proved themselves to match the general disdain of the nobility towards the rest of the population, as in their eyes only the educated few could truly appreciate their craft. Getting caught in the Great Fear of the 1789 summer and the following events' impact on the nobility, they fled to Scotland for the next decades, only coming back in 1814 with the Bourbon Restoration and later the July Monarchy bringing enough stability for the former nobles to regain their old domains. Through changing times and wars, they survived with varying degrees of ease, and remained one of the wealthiest families of the Champagne region until the present day.

    Sostenuto

Born with a great potential for Magecraft and seemingly a keener perception of music than any of her predecessors, Onde Cécile was determined to be the future head of the Sternweber de Chantecoq from her youngest age, as customary for a lot of old magi clans upon the birth of a gifted heir, and raised for this goal without seeing any consideration for her as a person. As such, she entered the Clock Tower at the young age of eleven, graduating from Mystile at fifteen and rising in the ranks quicker than most, reaching the rank of Pride at nineteen. Her essays on Musical Magecraft gained a degree of traction among Valuay, and she even co-authored one in Norwich and Animusphere, titled "Orbital Resonance's Effect on Human History, or why Pluto's degradation into a dwarf planet correlates with the USA's neither-state-nor-empire status and its recent decadence".
On April 23rd, a month before her planned graduation to Brand, things went south. While conducting a joint experiment with members of Animusphere and Brishisan, she attempted to combine the product of that research with the thesis of Ennoia Existentia von Mado she had studied for the past months. At the very moment the ritual activated, a single note resonated across the facility, and all observation devices in the room stopped, with the last audio recording showing a double spike of audio at 440 Hz and 1.76 MHz. When magi from outside rushed in after hearing the note, they found the researchers in the room fighting each other to the death, unleashing their spells against friends and colleagues alike, before all turning towards the intruders, according to the sole survivor of the incident. Although the data of what transpired there until Enforcers could suppress the fight was mostly expunged by Policies, two things were known : after the note, there was no physical trace of Onde to be found, and the Carillon Observatory issued a Sealing Designation to her in the following hours.

    Accelerando e Crescendo

    Likes:
Being in control, music, discovering new tunes, standing ovations
    Dislikes:
True silence, an audience that never claps
    Talents:
    Performing, interfering
    Natural enemies:
Angelus Ishmael von Mado, Aude Blancheflor Griffon de Diane-Andenne
    Alignment:
    Chaotic Neutral

The very definition of a perfect magus, one whose self became transparent yet retaining her ego.

Diligent yet passionate, putting all her soul in her craft, a true artist.

Yet, she yearns dearly for the audience's applause, recognition for her performance over her potential.

Though it only lasts for a minute, the love from the public could fill her heart like it never had been.

The life of a performer begins and ends with the audience’s clapping.

    Stringendo

    Mystic Eyes of Wave Perception
A unique brand of Mystic Eyes, although some theorized it to be a mix of Mystic and Pure Eyes. Following the "matter wave" theory proposed by Erwin Schrödinger, these eyes allow Onde to perceive the world not as particles, but waves. Whether these eyes are purely of the receiving-type that perceive the world as it is, or of enforcing-type that changes the world to fit the perception is a debate that still hasn't waned in the Norwich department, but the fact remains that she can sense the waves of matter and determine the wavelengths and frequencies that define them.

    -

    Harmonisation
The magecraft established by the Sternweber clan. A Foundation that draws upon the ideas of exploiting the inherent Mystery of art and the search for harmony within it. For the De Chantecoq branch, it is the key element to their Musical Magecraft. For the past millennium, they mastered the techniques to create a melody from nothingness to harmonize it with the World and reached the desired effect, until reaching its paroxysm until Onde's possession of the Crest, reaching the scale of a full-blown orchestra played by a single magus, a complete harmony that grows and wanes as she desires.

    And yet ...

    -

    Resonance
Though she had access to the Harmonisation magecraft of her family, it wasn't enough for Onde. Or rather, it wasn't optimized to the fullest extent of her abilities. As music is a vibration of matter that follows a specific pattern, it is a wave. Using the German Atlas alchemist's research on Wellen Magecraft, she built her own undiluted Foundation.
The logical extreme of Harmonisation, Resonance magecraft is one that focuses on seeking not to reach a harmony that syncs with the World, but to achieve the very same frequency as the target to combine both and amplify the initial effect well beyond the sum of both waves. Her implementation of acoustic resonance in musical magecraft is what earned her the rank of Pride, but it didn't stop here. As a general physical phenomenon, Resonance could be applied to as many fields of Magecraft as there are that use waves, for example mechanical resonance allowed to control and destroy material structures.

And this very Magecraft is what sealed her fate on that 23rd of April.

One must reach a frequency matching both oneself's and the World's to truly use this Magecraft, but that is impossible.

Therefore, to resonate with the World, one must become the wave of matching frequency.

By endlessly raising the frequency until infinity, the wave vibrates with a infinitely short period.

That is to say, a wave with a period of 「 」

    Con fuoco

"You can't run anymore, we got you now !"

This hunt was reaching its end.

No one can run forever, some just run for longer than others.

Many bodies were scattered across the stage floor, but three Enforcers remained.

"... That Magecraft really is disgusting, and yet you call yourself an artist. What's beautiful in making people kill each others just for you to give another 'reception' ?"

It had taken months of tracking, but finally, they were reaching their goal, the suppression of the magus in front of them.

Though that symphony whittled down their numbers, the survivors were confident in their ability to defeat her now that her spell was over.

"Even a genius like you can't cast another Greater Magecraft with a Single-Line, can you ? We handled it all the way to the finale ... It's over for you, Onde."

No one can run forever, but who needs an eternity ?

Outrunning fate is impossible, but outrunning the Clock Tower ? That, she could do.

She only needed a little more time.

"Un encore pour le public ! Da capo al fine !"

Match your frequency, and you shall resonate with the World.

Now, let us begin again the music of the apocalypse.

    Author's notes

Welp, this is it. A good chunk of he ideas for her came to me at the same time as I was writing Stranger for MCaS, but I had to wait until that was done to write her, and then spent an entire week not managing to actually write because I was struggling on the name. Everything after Sostenuto has been written in the last 14 hours due to that, hence its shortness.
Many thanks to Del for helping me find the music for the sheet.
Random, I have to say, Neutral M. Flashgraph helped me so much into getting in the vibe so I can't not credit you for that.
Funnily enough, this sheet is quite inspired by Project Moon (mainly Silent Orchestra ofc, but also 1.76MHz and then some others), and both magi referenced in this sheet (Angelus Ishmael and Ennoia Existentia) are a friend's OCs with PM FCs, so that's a thing.
I probably mis-explained it, but basically the Sternweber is a whole clan revolving around art-based Magecraft, and the de Chantecoq is one of their branches, specialized in musical Magecraft.
I wanted to explain the link between her Magecraft and Musica universalis, but couldn't word it in properly.
Resonance is essentially an exploit Magecraft making use of her Origin, allowing her to control whatever she resonates with, hence the magi fighting each other, and her subsequent Sealing Designation (being able to bypass the Resistance effect).
As to why she vanished at that experiment, the short answer is that she awakened her Origin and literally turned into a wave, thus physically disappearing.

Hold on. I think there's been some confusion here.

If I am correct, the original deadline was April 22nd and then we got a two week extension. Doesn't that mean the extended deadline should be May 6th at 11 PM PST? In other words, there's still half a day left, no?

Even if I'm wrong about this, I'd like to petition to push back the deadline until then due to the confusion, in case anyone else also assumed the May 6 deadline.

When I asked You on the CaS Discord he said May 5th
But yeah if anyone assumed May 6th I support adding an extension too, even if solely for the sake of having more entries for the last round of this Season.
Really a shame that we don't have dynamic timestamps in BBcode (especially since it shows at the bottom of the page that it can detect the user's timezone) to make clearer deadline announcements, but it is what it is.

Wind: I have to admit I have kind of a bias for Random's magi, and Wind is part of the reason. The first Scandinavian sniper of the four we saw this month, funnily enough. Not gonna lie I really like that guy. The concept is cool, the execution too, the abilities are pretty creative, he fits in the prompt really nicely, and the romance is the cherry on the cake. Seriously, Järnethuld is really lucky. 10/10 would hunt with him any time.

Yatzil Velasquez Ximal: Mommysorrymommysorrymommysorrymommysorry- Ahem. That was a long read, but a really good one. She doesn't fit the prompt, she straight up embodies it. I really like the origin story of the yearly sacrifice that was a god for a year surviving the Spaniards, that was a pretty cool concept. I really love the story you told, it's definitely on the longer side yet it was pretty compelling. I am kinda biased against the existence of Basil because I made my own magus lineage sent by Lore to monitor the spider, but his dynamic with Yatzil is pretty nice, and doesn't fall into the cliché love story one could have expected of that situation, which is nice. You cooked hard af, and it shows.

Ryan House: Pretty cool concept, and while short the sheet executes it pretty well. The idea of a magus that can't use magecraft besides one that runs autonomously is fun, though it means no isolation Bounded Field to make sure "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas". All in all, an interesting magus that falls well in the prompt.

Elena Erdene: This. This is what I'm talking about when I talk about embodying the prompt. This is Don't-Create-a-Servant, and more than creating a magus like we did, you created a lore alongside Elena. I have something of a small bias about the Soviet Union and the product of their lies given my latest Servant was the Elephant's Foot, and the Red Chamber is a pretty cool way of handling that. And that repetition about loving the country you live in concluding with loving the country that lives in you is really nice.

Damn, now that I've read all the sheets thoroughly I have no idea as to how to vote anymore. Y'all cooked too hard.

    Kaliska Nayati Khaldun

Alias: Shadow Killer Magecraft: Ars Goetia, Shadow Molding
Year of birth: 1999 Origin: Shadow
    Height/Weight: 166cm/66kg Attribute: Demon
Country of origin: Germany Element: Ether, Imaginary Numbers
Affiliation: Nayati family, Khaldun clan, Millenium (a single pruned world) Circuit Quantity: A
Species: Magus, Mixed-Blood Circuit Quality: A+
Day of decisive battle: One spar too much Circuit Composition: Normal

    The Nayati family

Since time immemorial, long before it settled in cities and tilled the land, mankind has always felt fascination and reverence for the forces of the unseen. Spirits of nature, remaining hidden from humanity yet lending a hand when asked through rituals and the likes. As civilization went on, other entities came to make their presence known too, invisible forces that were born from mankind and stood in their midst. Distortions of nature, unbound from physical laws. Through different cultures, these distortions took different forms, and for each, some people decided to study them.
In the Germanic regions of the Holy Roman Empire, such a family took upon themselves to study the regional variant of these distortions. Working as undertakers and healers, the Nayati family remained in the shadows, hiding from the Holy Church in the very area of their influence for centuries, while being some of the greatest specialists of Western Europe in the field of demons. Keeping a place of choice in the Clock Tower's Department of Spiritual Evocation, they perfected the craft of summoning and binding the Spirits and Phantasmal Beasts that took the form of the Demons of folklore by adapting the King of Mages’ Ars Goetia Foundation to their usage.
As countless other magi, their magecraft often resulted in undergoing bodily modifications to facilitate a ritual or another, to increase one's compatibility with the demon they were trying to channel or contract. However, such change wasn't without consequences, and more than once resulted in a loss of fertility, among other issues. A death sentence for magi, as it would mean cessation of their quest for the Root, since even life-prolongating Magecraft had its limits. Alchemists, Zoology members and other life-weavers didn't face such issues, but the common magus was not so lucky, as only a handful of Foundations displayed a way to artificially create a heir or fix the fertility issue at its root.
That being said, the Nayati had an ace in their sleeve too. If it was in fact impossible for these unlucky magi to produce a heir naturally, their craft wasn't one that bothered following tbe limits of nature and the human perception of possibility. Making use of their mastery over demons, existences that regularly took human form to deceive others, at several points in the history of the Nayati was a child born from the union of a human magus and a contract-bound demon. Bolstering their lineage's Circuits by the same occasion, it became common practice for Nayati magi to prepare several heirs at each generation, in case one child's inhuman blood were to awaken, leaving some siblings to continue lineage and act as a facade to avert the outside world's gaze from the unholy crafts of the Nayati.

    Background

After centuries, the Nayati had built themselves to a large clan well established in the European magical world and as a force to be reckoned with since the Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian Wars. Though the first World War cost them the lives of a decent part of the clan, it continued on strong during the Great Depression thanks to their contracted demons’ wealth sustaining them. However, their haughty confidence would only further deepen the pit of their fall, and things turned sour suddenly during the Second World War. Owing a debt to a very high-ranked magus, the main family's head was sent to secure the German Occupation's hold on France by wiping out resistance cells in the wilderness, the Maquis. Irritated by that order, he only grew more careless as he saw the task as beneath him, a work better cut for a lower class of magus. However, pride only aggravated his downfall, and he died to an Egyptian Dead Apostle guarding the Charles Martel Maquis.
Losing their Magic Crest at the same time as their family head, the main branch of the Nayati quickly fell from grace as the rest of the clan deserted them, leaving only the remnants behind, a mere few children with fewer leftover grimoires to their name, in the midst of Germany's defeat and the aftermath.
Left alone in the cold unfeeling world, itself deeply wounded and scarred, the children could only rely on each other to continue, and so they did. Only knowing a handful of spells compared to the countless rituals of the previous generations, they survived as well as they could ; though they only had their Circuits as a pedigree for the ruthless magical world, they managed to grow back from misery to at least a correct living wage as they grew older thanks to financial help for orphans. As time passed, the next generation came, and the next one as well. After suffering from the consequences of centuries of hubris crumbled in a mere few years, the family had lost all their interest for magecraft, knowing they would only find pain if they returned to this cruel rapacious world.
Yet, despite their hopes of cutting bridges, their past came back. Among the second generation born after the loss, one child stood out from the others. Showing from a young age abilities that her family never hoped to see again, Kaliska was born with the inhuman blood of her ancestors, carrying the legacy of the Nayati. Growing up in a loving family only brought closer by the hardships they went through during the second half of the century, Kaliska secretly fought in underground clubs as soon as she entered high-school, taking advantage of her unnatural strength to easily beat unsuspecting opponents and help her family with the money she earned that way. Rising up to higher fighting grounds over the years, she gained an infamous reputation underground, attracting the attention of those who knew where to look. However, higher fighting grounds meant stronger opponents, and she had to draw more and more from her inhuman blood to keep up with trained humans, even though her small unassuming frame played in her favor. One day, she drew further than she ever did, and tragedy struck. With her demonic factor taking over her humanity, she underwent her first Inversion in the middle of a fight, tearing up a grown man into pieces in front of a large audience. In short, a disaster waiting to happen.
However, luck was on her side, or rather someone was. A mere few moments after her transformation, hands formed of solid shadows held her down and the crowd stopped at once, put under a trance by a member of the audience. For dwellers of the magical world, a young girl beating up grown men with ease without any apparent training was usually a sign that Mystery was involved, and word about Kaliska's fights reached the ears of a figure shrouded with shadows, Layla Khaldun. Leaping from the audience to the ring, the lean blonde Egyptian beauty beat down the transformed girl until she came back to her senses, and took her outside while the audience was still under her spell. Once they left the room, the situation was exposed to Kaliska : she had risked breaking the Concealment of Mystery, the first law of the magical world, and she had a choice to make.

Would she go back to the ring, and fight as she used to, at the risk of another Inversion, this time in the eyes of magi with less kindness ?
Would she leave her life behind, and follow the woman who saved her, joining a predatory world of mystery she was part of by her birthright ?

Of course, she choose to —

    Talents:
Fighting dirty, hiding in plain sight
    Natural enemies:

    Alignment:
    Chaotic Neutral

Unfitting for a magus carrying the legacy of a millennium-old lineage, Kaliska is a young woman with a personality closer to a school thug than a dignified magus. She is a careless battle-junkie who fights for her own enjoyment without any regard for norms. Arrogant to a certain extent, she only acknowledges as enemies those who prove themselves to be a challenge to her.
Though hot-headed and somewhat egocentric, she is not a bad person at core, and won't hide her love for her close ones.

    Abilities

    Shapeless Shadows
    Schattenwelt

Kaliska's signature ability, and the root of many of her spells. The Alien Common Sense she displays because of her inhuman factor, manifested as a world of shadows due to her Origin awakening the blood of a Demon of shadows from the fourteenth century : in the world of Magecraft, that inner spiritual World is known as a Reality Marble. It takes the form of a realm filled with complete opaque darkness as far as the eye can see, thus it is impossible for any relying on their five senses to actually perceive what it contains. As a matter of fact, Kaliska herself is unable to properly make out the shape of anything in this darkness. Yet, because it is a world born from her mind, her perception, it takes the form she perceives it to have, thus, it is a world devoid of any given shape. However, being shapeless doesn't mean it's empty. On the contrary, instead of hollow void, it is filled with unshaped Ether Clumps waiting only for her to mold them with her imagination.

    -

    Mystic Eyes of World Projection
A unique set of Noble Colour Mystic Eyes possessed by Kaliska, which laid dormant until Layla helped her discover her inhuman abilities. Upon activation, she brings the senses of the targets selected within her sight into an illusion of her world, that is to say, she overrides their visual channel with her Alien Common Sense, Schattenwelt. While she is yet to learn how to properly deploy her Reality Marble, these Mystic Eyes more than make up for it, as it creates a gap between her target's shifted view and the reality of the world around them that she can exploit to her advantage in a fight, remaining unseen as she traps their sight in endless darkness.

    -

    Shadow Molding
The main Magecraft that Kaliska practices, a combination of Projection and Displacement Magecraft. She pulls Ether Clumps of tangible shadows from her inner world, and applies a shape and concept to them to use as she pleases. Through this, she can create a wide variety of effects, depending on the underlying concepts, such as a cloud of dark smoke to obscure others’ vision, animals born from the shapeless mud like snakes and bats, or physical constructs, like the claws she usually uses in close quarters. Compared to normal Projections, it pales in term of resemblance to the original image, but shows a clear advantage due to its composition, allowing a rapid reshaping of existing constructs into another form.

    -

    Devil-bound Shooter
    Nambu Type 14

The personal Mystic Code that Kaliska wields, the only heirloom she kept from her family after Layla retrieved it from her great-grandfather’s corpse. Built from the standardized gun of the Japanese officers of the Second World War, it has been enchanted to resemble the legend of a hunter who made a contract with the devil - the so-called Der Freischütz. Its casual use is to shoot compacted magical energy into a physical interference spell, but its proper use involves a curse to shoot a series of seven enchanted bullets, each stronger and more precise than the previous one - however, the seventh inflicts both the shooter and the target with its curse, though only the latter has to worry about the bullet's impact itself. A Demon is bound by a contract to the gun itself, and the wraith of the Japanese officer who originally wielded it remained linked to it too, lending its help to its wielder.

    Author's notes

Aaaaand a second entry because let's take advantage of the extension for the sake of it. Simpler because I have less time, it's speedrunning time thanks to You's extension.
A fun fact about Kaliska is that she originally was designed as a Master in a very particular War in a worldline that honestly ciuld only end up pruned … And her Servant is on this forum ! It's none other than Frigix's Cesare Borgia.
So yeah. No epilogue because the only one I could think off felt too similar to Wind’s for me to proceed.

Xolotl and my first Tez attempt have definitely entered Dark Past territory for me, but I'm glad they were still able to make an impression. Thank you.

I don't really like doing honorable mentions so I'll just review everyone at once and then do points after.

    Wind - Random:

Let me be the first to tell you that I think going for the narrative option was a good idea. While the storytelling is definitely ethereal, I think there’s also a lot of unspoken history between Wind, Järnethuld, and VALRAVN.

That being said, I think not saying too much might have also been somewhat of a detriment here, at least to me. Wind doesn’t necessarily come across as very Swedish, or exemplative of the country’s contract-based magecraft outside of the fact that that’s what he uses. Maybe I’m just stupid, and the dodginess at Wind’s true identity/existence is intentional in some other hidden way, but if so I’m wondering if it was hinted at effectively…

Don’t let this come off as me not enjoying him. The distant personality is fitting, and the twist that the narrator was Järnethuld was executed well I think. They make for a compelling pair for certain kinds of stories, and I’d be interested in how Wind and his Talking Gun approach different challenges based on their personalities. I just don’t think he quite hits the mark on the prompt, sorry. I really, really wish I could give Wind more points.

    Ryan House - OddEyedDuelist:

Solid ideas, I think. While it’s definitely a first attempt, I think there’s lots of room to play with both the mechanics of Ryan’s luck inversion and how it affects his day to day life. Especially since luck seems to be more directly equated with pure probability in TM, being immensely unlucky can still cause improbable events to occur just as much as someone with “good luck.”

Ryan’s foundation lying in Las Vegas makes me wonder if he has any of the mob connections responsible for funding Sin City in the first place. Or, in TM's case, the narrative identity of Vegas was instead transferred to Narita’s OC city of Snowfield. I’m not bringing this up because I’m the only person who cares about the Scladio family, I promise.

    Elena Erdene- GilgameshKingofMemes:

I like Elena a lot, but like Wind there’s just something that’s missing to me. The image of a jaded magus recruited by force into a statist organization that clearly has no use for her other than what she can offer to the Soviet Union is compelling. She’s a tool, she knows she’s a tool, so instead of succumbing to any kind of despair or channeling her hopes elsewhere, she puts so much of herself into her work that it acts as a grounding foundation for her. Definitely a character that can only exist at a certain point in history, but emblematic of at least some parts of it.

It’s the surrounding framework that troubles me, I guess. Tackling the Soviet Union and its state-imposed atheism is tricky, to say the least, and should probably be commended just in the attempt. A political organization infamous for calling religion the opiate of the masses only to turn around and make profitable use of it is fitting irony for sure, but attempting to birth a new god of the state is, um, a decision. There’s also a certain reliance on PM imagery, but I don’t think it’s make or break.

Also, Elena and Alina were hard to differentiate at times. I am dumb and need names to be at least slightly different.

That being said, by my own interpretation of the prompt, Elena fits the best.

Onde Cécile Sternweber de Chantecoq - Marethyu77:

Tres bien. Onde feels the most like a part of the academic world, with a history grounded in the geopolitics of the time, at least on the mundane side of things. Onde herself reminds me a bit of Olga-Marie and her plight, even with her untimely “death” right before reaching her peak. I think the most interesting bit that could have stood to be explored more are her eyes.

Her personality is strong, but her character itself feels like there’s more to say.

On the topic of saying more…we have an example of Tuning in-universe by way of Melvin, who also happens to use music as his medium. I’m wondering if Onde is acquainted with Tuning in any way, or at least the Weins family.

More of an aside, but the inherent conflict between a Western and Eastern approach to the search of a toneless note came to mind while reading the sheet. The–arrogant, perhaps–attempt at recreating a tone beyond human comprehension versus the supposed extinction of all other sound so that only the void remains.

Well, being a Clock Tower magus from a family affiliated with the Clock Tower since many generations does help grounding her into an established structure, which then helps with the system of ranks establish that she is a genius in her field (and the essay is mostly because I was thinking a lot about Neutral M. Flashgraph when writing her so that definitely played a role). As for the eyes, yeah it's just that I lacked time and inspiration to talk about them more, since they played a major part into shaping her as a person and a magus (as the world is music to her, in the most literal meaning, and thus an object of study) and into the rest of her abilities being as efficient as they are as she can find the target's frequency much faster thanks to her eyes.

Her personality is strong, but her character itself feels like there’s more to say.
True, I kinda had trouble picturing her in my mind outside of the passionate face she shows while she performs, because as she perceives everything as a wave and thus a melody, and because of how she is, every moment where she is active is part of a performance. To the World of Magecraft, she reached the line where one stops being an individual magus and starts being a phenomenon.

On the topic of saying more…we have an example of Tuning in-universe by way of Melvin, who also happens to use music as his medium. I’m wondering if Onde is acquainted with Tuning in any way, or at least the Weins family.
I actually wondered about that, because of course Tuning was the first Magecraft I looked into, but I kinda felt like it might have been a bit too much for her to possess, even though she is meant to be a well-rounded genius, so maybe I should have also given her Tuning, that could have helped explaining how her Resonance allowed her to bypass Resistance I guess. And yeah, regardless of whether Onde herself is a Tuner, there is definitely Tuners in the family.

Honestly I just hadn't looked into that, that would definitely be an interesting perspective to use if I ever remake her.

Thanks for the points, didn't think she'd beat Wind in that regard (tho tbh I am very much biased towards Random's magi)
