“The Zoa? As far as I am aware, they are merely gangsters of the brutish variety. While they might perform a number of wicked sorceries, I have no reason to believe they are demon conjurors. That’s something in the Black Forest’s domain, according to rumor.”

If Gabriella noticed a change in your demeanor, she didn’t show it. Instead she carried on with the same smug cadence as she did before. It was hard to tell if she amused or something else.

“But the demons plague those with wounded hearts. It’s through such scars that they wiggle inside. While I doubt the Zoa to be the masterminds of such a farce, they may be the unintentional orchestrators of our unfortunate circumstance.”

Gabriella seems to offer a humble prayer, no longer than a brief nod, grasping her hands together. While you couldn’t rule out just how much these gangsters were involved, it seemed the North Star held the belief that their influence was merely secondary. They might be an important player, but they seemed to reject the idea they were the culprits.

“That’s not to say they are unknowledgeable, this is their turf. I hesitate to believe they know nothing at all.”

Jun watches casually as Anima hurries around the office packing her things in preparation to depart. His eyes lingered upon the gun on the wall, waiting to see if she’d actually bring it down only for her to move on from it.

“Whatever floats your boat ma’am. We’re one big family to the end, for better or for worse. I can’t turn you down if you ask so nicely.”

With a nod at her request Jun prepared himself to head out, which consisted of adjusting his shirt and nothing more. He didn’t need much to get ready.

It seemed to you that Jun, while maybe not in the know, was also considering the possibility of things getting violent. Even so he was perfectly willing to come along as if it was a casual outing.

Of all the things to seriously ponder in your conversation thus far, it seemed sweets were the thing he decided to actually put his mind to.

With much skill and charisma behind you, slipping into the natural flow of the talkative table is like second nature. In a moment it’s as if you were always a part of the conversation. It was barely even a test of skill to get these two folks blabbering on about that strange rumor.

“It’s a load of nothing that’s what. It’s probably just another fucked up magus from Tartarus jumping around at night. I don’t get why people are so worked up about it. And terrible name I might add.”

The woman crosses her arms before realizing she almost forgot the most important part.

“Oh and uh, bring me a Whitbread Gold Label.”

“She’s just saying that cause she’s never seen it. As a genuine witness, I’ll give you a real rundown…. Oh, and if I could get some kind of fruity drink that’d be great.”

The man leans back in his chair, one arm hung over the back as he turns his head back to face you.

“I don’t know if you ever been down to Zazel’s Love Connections, but it’s a popular matchmaker service for magi hoping some intermingling may raise their status at the west side of the markets.”

The points to the left with his thumb, seeming to be the sort who uses his hands a lot to talk.

“Well for like a week now, people have been seeing a shadowy figure hanging around that shop and street. At first glance in the dark, you might mistake them for a man, only to notice the bastards got a gaping void for a head. Speaks like a vintage radio announcer too.”

“I’m hardly convinced it’s anything special.”

The woman just rolls her eyes at the mans description, not particularly convinced considering how deeply the would be drenched in fantasies in their daily life.

“You wouldn’t say it if you saw the thing. I was starting to see static before the thing flew away. I wonder if the idea that it’s eating people's love checks out?”

“Now that one clearly has no basis.”

The woman once again dismisses the idea outright but the man just shrugs his shoulders brushing it off.

“It’s just a theory. Why else would a demon thing wanna hang around a love shack?”

    “Llanfair? Are listening?” Llanfair?”

Vasiliki calls your name as you depart but far too distracted you vanish from his office as quickly as you entered. He watches the heavy door slam behind you, once again leaving him alone with the hum of machinery for company.

“Oh I guess your dear manager isn’t worth a goodbye? Just gonna take the job and leave! Kids these days…..”

    ……………

If you were reading things right, the package was set to be delivered somewhere at the management office. It wasn’t that far a trek so things were looking to be a quick and pleasant trip. You could take a trip through one of the nicer parts of town, strolling casually into the large complex of the management office.

A large, ornate fortification with large stone walls, it was one of the oldest buildings in the city located close by to one of Magisfair’s ever important entrances. With plenty of money poured into it the area was far more scenic than most of the city, possessing a collection of vibrant wildlife, some of which you’d never find on the surface.

However all that money and armaments meant a firm barrier between the residents and the riff raff. Brought forth to the front gate, the point through which everything must pass, you were met with not merely regular security.

No, today for some reason, the M.S.D was on guard. The captain had come by at the same time you were. She appeared to be discussing something with those at the gate before realizing your presence, turning to face you personally.

“Do you have business here ma’am?”

They get to be the Enforcer closest to the place where Sealing Designations are decided, but the odds of ever actually pursuing one are low for they cannot leave Magisfair.”

Tindal provides a basic overview of her functions, but no more than what you would already know if you research information about her beforehand. It perhaps wasn’t the most satisfying answer, but it seemed Tindal would be playing her cards close to her chest.

“Amongst the Enforcers there isn’t one more suited for Albion than her. Many times she is hired just like an excavator would so she has plenty experience in the tomb.”

Tendrils almost reflexively meet the glint of sharp steel. If Angelica was a smidge faster, or Nuallaini a smidge slower, they would have had problems, to say the least. Breathing a sigh of relief, Angelica tries to find words almost as meaningless as the ones Urizen’s aide uttered to her just moments before. Information is a commodity, and she’s not one to give freely.

“Just something I’ve been meaning to pawn off,” she says with a nervous laugh. The statement is excellently crafted in her book. One, it tells her fellow excavator only that it is fae-related, and nothing else, and two, it gives anyone within earshot the notion it’s up for sale. Advertising at the grassroots level without drawing too many prying eyes.

“It’s alright, no harm, no foul,” Angelica continues, following her urge to get the hell out of here. She glances at the address on the envelope. Cait Sith Casino. “I’ve got work to get to, so I’ll be off.”

With that, she tries to make her leave.

"I see, thank you for the information, Mrs. Tindall," she respectfully nodded.

(Are all magi like this? I understand the secrecy rule for preservation of mystery, but to think they also hide key informations for a mission...)

She doesn't outwardly show her annoyance, but even someone as forward as Alina can tell that this person hides something. There is no way someone of her position will employ someone that they doesn't understand at all. There must be something she wanted to gain from this without sharing to the rest of the team.

But above all else, it was the intent that pissed her off the most.

This person tried to control others like somesort of a chess piece. And for a former Atlas-, no for the human named Alina Ardiansyah that learned Atlas' Laplace's Demon magecraft theory by herself, there is nothing more despicable and worthy of punishment than people trying to control her life.

However, her deep-seething hatred quickly gone when one of her peers answers her honest gesture.

"I was adopted by the Eltnam and I can't stand their bullshit. So in sort, I flee from home and join the Clock Tower instead! Serve those boomers right!"

As she laughed at her own action, she notice that Owen has been staring at the object that float above her head. A supercomputer that modelled after the von Braun wheel, her ultimate Mystic Code, the GBS-Photic: Cerebral Halo. A device that symbolize everything Alina stood for, it is both her pride, her theory, and her hope as a magus and as a human.

"As for why I agree to this... Long story short, I want to control my own fate. And I believe the First Magic can help me out."

She says without a hint of lies from her part.

"What about you? Are you looking for the First too?" she streches her hand for a handshake as a sign of goodwill.

    Charapalos Kallergis
    Phase 1
Day 1 - Afternoon (New Moon)
    Holy Church - Basement Morgue

True to Gwyn's warnings, what was left of David Brayford resembled something from some tale of terror or the handiwork of a most debauched Apostle. An aberrant mass of flayed and wound-out flesh, its protruding cavity making it more a morbid cocoon, hollowed out by some unknown horror. Even when bereft of innards and blood, the sight alone would have seasoned Knights lose their luncheon.

    "Ohoh, interesting."

But the corpse elicited not even a flinch from Charapalos, merely looking over the coroner's proceedings as one with a passing curio. Instead, the towering Knight-Captain seemed more engrossed at the sight than anything else.

Demonic influence is a well-documented, albeit eclectic subject in the Hospitaller records. While suppression before true manifestation is greatly preferred, there are cases where that was unavoidable. From those recorded incidents, all are categorized under two primary methods of manifestation:

One: Generation, where the collective feelings and wishes of the environment lead to the demon's appearance.
And Two: Possession, where a singular subject's emotions and desires lead to an appearance using said subject as a vessel.

Charapalos will admit the deeper psychology of the field eludes him, but he had read, heard, and fought just enough for that to catch his eye.

"A manifestation through parasitic means is new, but the symptoms do not lie — fascinating and worrying. Miss Gwyn, have there been similar cases that you know o-"

The question was cut off as a new arrival passed through the door. Sporting austere clothing and expression, this man must be one of the Executors assigned to this campaign. How timely, introductions must take precedence once more.

"'Funny Red Man' is a way of putting it. But yes, I am that very man you speak of."

A peculiar way of designation. Goodness; less than a day beneath this false-sky and already two strange nicknames on his belt – this campaign has already proved more amusing than loafing within the Hospitallers' halls. Letting out a chuckle, Charapalos continued.

"I am Charapalos Kallergis, but you may call this Knight-."

Convenient indeed. Charapalos had expected to meet the last two later, but gathering most of them now is acceptable. And like her older compatriot, Elyra seemed to be the forward type. As expected of the Church's Swords, all too eager to strike down any foe of the great Matrice.

As the Knight finished his greetings, the newest arrival spared no time and made her first inquiry.

"Goodness me, already with the questions! But a good one nonetheless -- and honest questions deserve honest answers."

"To address your concerns Miss Reissford, the violent demise of poor Brayford has very much to do with us. While it would be smoother had the Assembly provided us prior intelligence, the Church has no foothold whatsoever in Magisfair; unfortunately, this means we must scour information on our lonesome.

"As much as I wished the North Star could aid us, I doubt they have the needed expertise, not to mention how poorly it will look in the locals' eyes." The Knight-Captain shook his head as if in wry acceptance. "We are not the law of this land, and it would be wise not to catch their ire so soon."

Mere thoughts of those blindfolded Knights attempting interrogation were enough for Charapalos to banish it in embarrassment. Befitting the Hammers of the Church, most Knights were not known for their subtlety.

"— –Which brings us towards the other matter; while the certainty of a genuine Witch is not one-hundred-percent, the subject of demonic elements cannot be overlooked. While their suppression is usually left to the Exorcists, the implication of genuine manifestation means it is already out of their hands. And for that, such distorted infestations are to be... excised, hence where we fall in.

Gesturing towards the two Executors, the Knight-Captain continued.

"As reassuring your willingness to act is, Miss Reissford, we do not have much choice but to play detective for the time being. Once we obtain a clearer picture or confirm multiple cases of manifestation, then you should be free to demonstrate your talents."
The Act of dozing off in the afternoon is a luxury indeed.
    Coffee would be nice, though.

Elyra analyzed Charapalos’s response. His words were delivered in a smooth and confident tone, yet with a sort of melodic air to them. If she had to guess, he must have some experience with public speaking or posses a natural charisma. The knight’s answer did well to alleviate most of her concerns. It wasn’t as if she had solid reasons to doubt the North Star’s intentions in the first place. Her main goal was to make sure all their bases were covered.

As a default response to irregular actions, assuming ignorance or lack of capability was more probable than malintent. If there was a confirmed threat of Demonic Possession, then prioritizing it over the hypothetical Witch was a logical step to take.

Still, there were a few more facts to clear up. Elyra tilted her head quizzically.

“Your reasoning makes sense to a degree. I'm guessing you have no reason to doubt the North Star sincerely needs our help? That still leaves the question of 'why us'. Our group seems to be specifically assembled for the upcoming expedition. If the North Star needs force, would it not be more logical to first subcontract the investigation phase to specialists within Magisfair?"

Elyra awaited Charapalos’s reply, and it took only a moment for him to respond in his usual flowing tone.

Our inclusion may not be enough."
There was no fault Elyra could find with Sir Charapalos’s answer this time either. It was reassuring to see a commanding officer demonstrate competency. It was better to be cautious than overconfident. Oftentimes the success and failure of a mission hinged more on the legwork/logistics from the planning phase more than the execution itself.

As for handling the negotiations... her thought processes rarely dealt with the diplomatic variables of a mission. As an Executor much of her time was spent diving into the lair of one target after another with little downtime. It was not her job to worry about the fallout. She supposed that’s why Charapalos was placed in a higher rank for this particular mission. Perhaps by observing him at work, she could shore up her deficiency of experience in this subject?

Furthermore, her specialization mostly lay in the slaying of Dead Apostles and other similar Beasts. Elyra did not have a solid foundation to judge the threat level of Demonic Possession outbreaks.

She gave the funeral director Gwyn and the Backup Muscle a quick scan before returning her gaze to Charapalos.

"Very well Sir Charaos. To clarify, my questions are not intended to cast any doubts on your own abilities or our higher up's. I just wanted to confirm that all of our facts were aligned so we can work towards our objectives efficiently. Rest assured that I will put my full efforts into this matter. As you may already know, I have skills pertaining towards both infiltration and scouting. If haste is a requirement, I recommend that I be allowed to secure the crime scene ahead of time. That is of course, if my direct superior Saint Thekla approves. I believe she will join when she is finished speaking with the Grandmaster."

While Elyra was personally curious about the hypothetical ‘Witch’ and the mysterious Dark Forest, she was also motivated to gain achievements within the Church. The North Star was no mere sub organization, thus it would do well to make a good impression. It was also worth noting that Knight Captain Charapalos would be a good connection to maintain friendly relations with.

Her usual modus operandi was to efficiently and accurately accomplish any tasks she set her mind to. Gathering information happened to be a subset of her skills as an infiltrator. Elyra would be able to reach the scene of the crime faster than her peers. If she was able to get Saint Thekla’s approval, she could set out right away.

Looking over the body, John could see why his skills were needed. The poor wretch was hollowed out and his extremities warped with growths that matched well with the more outwardly visible cases of demonic possession that John has seen.

When the other person finally entered the room, John turned his gaze over to inspect them. The woman calling herself 'Elyra' fits well to the image John was constructing from her footsteps. She's of slender enough build and rather young, however, she carries herself with the posture of a trained killer.

Her youth, while unusual, is nothing out of the ordinary for this line of work. Still, it would be prudent to find out the circumstances that has resulted in the trained killer with the appearance of an eighteen year old in front of him. Nevertheless, the reasons could range from anything between her simply receiving a similar training as John to her being a homunculus.

Judging off her looks alone, John feels confident that she'll be sufficiently competent for the task ahead. However, her appearance does raise concerns. Her purple eyes and white hair suggest she's tainted with the curroptive influence of magic or, perhaps worse, she's one of those strange people who dye their hair, wear contacts, and dress like they are always attending a Victorian funeral for some strange reason that John cannot for the life of him discern.

Not one for introductions, John simply nods at this.

While not incorrect in her assessment, it does seem strange for an Executor to question the orders they have been given. Admittedly cautiousness is no sin, however, intensive questioning of command can mask deeper deeper lack of faith or disloyalty. It certainly would be prudent to keep an eye on Elyra in the future.

While a bit more verbose in cut and dry situations than John would like, he must admit that Captain Kallergis is certainly well spoken. Beyond that, Captain's reasoning is sound and it would not be surprising if his superior had correctly discerned the brass' reasoning for sending them out on this mission.

Admittedly, John would have preferred if Kallergis' answer was closer to something like 'Our orders are orders and therefore it is our duty to heed them', however, he must concede that such reasoning may appear to be lacking to those in the church with weaker convictions.

John felt a twinge of annoyance that almost was able to manifest past his professional mien, but he nips that feeling in the bud. Still, he not impressed by Elyra's meaningless justifications for her questions. Being able to say so little in so many words is a mark of a great sophist. Furthermore, the over eagerness to personally secure the area ahead of the others is questionable. While John certain would like to have the area secured as soon as possible, he cannot help but feel that Elyra's assertion that she go ahead alone to secure the area is suspicious. An experienced Executor going so far as to tamper with evidence is doubtful, however, even seeking to be the first to a scene out of a foolish sense of vainglory or worse a desire for reward and recognition is damnable behavior for a warrior of the Church.

... Still John must admit the possibility that envy or pride is blinding his perception. He has already seen that he has not properly tamed his sinful mind after all.

Resolving to take a neutral path forward, John states, "She is not allow in such skills. With your leave, I could venture ahead to secure the crime scene ahead of our investigation."

“Hm…” Thekla nodded slightly at Gabriella’s words, and brought the cup of tea that she’d accompanied her lunch with to her lips in a gesture that exuded education and high class. Meaningless posturing, perhaps, but at this point it was so much part of her image that she’d found it hard to not do it instead.

The smugness was setting her on edge. Gabriella knew something she didn’t, and she suspected the intentional understated arrogance was a way to call attention to that. And truth be told she didn’t have the patience to play that game right now.

“Very well. However, then should we assume that the Zoa and the Autopsy Division may not like to have a demon running around in the city they regard as their backyard, yes? Wouldn’t some of the other factions within the city want to take a stab at their uninvited guest as well?”

She took a sip from her tea again, draining the rest of it, and brought it down, leaving it on the plate’s side. Her eyes, however, remained fixed on the Grandmaster all the while. It was somewhat disquieting, unnerving even. One could almost feel Thekla’s regard physically, as if she was measuring. Weighing. Considering something.

Perhaps Gabriella’s soul. Perhaps it was something more innocent. Perhaps she was merely getting back at her by being spooky. Only Thekla knew the answer.

“Oh, another doubt, if I may, Miss Gabriella… Why us four? Why not have your order handle this… case?” The Saint had her own ideas, of course, but she still asked, if perhaps only out of idle curiosity. She wanted to hear the Grandmaster’s reply. Her motives, as it were.

The answer came not from Yvonne, who was always late to register speaking over singing, but from Anima, who had coincidentally arrived on the opposite side of the gate along with her guide. She and Jun made for a strange pair, resembling thanks to their youthful countenances and style of dress a pair of high-schoolers out on a date, an odd sight in Magisfair. Anima skipped forward, waving a goofy hello to Yvonne without an ounce of shame.

"Business, it is! A large work, very important, top secret, hush-hush. If one keeps quiet they might get a cinnamon swirl doughnut delivered by evening, hm?" she winked at the guard.

Whether Yvonne and Anima were familiar was a story for another time. The only certainty was that the diminutive management member seemed altogether happy to see one of the people on her list so soon.

"Shall we, friend?" she said to Yvonne. "We are just leaving on a quest for lemon tarts."

Worming your way out of the awkward conversation you slipped away as politely as you could manage. It seemed like Nuallaini wanted to say something but you didn’t want to stick around to listen. With a twisted face such as theirs, it was impossible to tell what they were thinking.
Thus with steady efficiency you made off towards the casino. While this district of the city was covered in many bright and flashy attractions, the casino was a location hard to miss. A massive complex with flashing neon lights, it’s massive income meant numerous advertisements to lead folks right to it.

Standing at the imposing entrance doors you had arrived at your destination but there wasn’t a clear sign of the folks you had been suddenly tasked with meeting. At very least one of them was already working here so you couldn’t have been the first person to arrive at your meeting local.

This wasn’t exactly a place your particularly liked or visited so you weren’t exactly sure where to start looking for someone, and thus headed inside the main floor…..

Between the bustling crowd, loud noises and cigarette smoke, your eyes honed in on something that didn’t feel right. A lone man sat at a table doing nothing at all. He was a strange, distracting presence that wasn’t doing anything but simply gave off the wrong vibe. You couldn’t be sure if he was looking at you but you felt like he was.

You were at least able to avoid the problem by spotting one of the people you were supposed to meet. A waitress out serving drinks and chatting with a couple of excavators. It seemed the many strange figures of Magisfair were somehow being drawn to you, but perhaps it would be better to just put your mind towards the job and keep gong.

Gywn greets the executors with the same casual attitude she did the knight. She certainly had the most peculiar of crowds today, the nature of body confronted with a subdued level headedness.

“As for other cases my red friend, that’s…. Undetermined. I’m sure the imp sightings have helped bring the Church here. But those bubble up from the tomb. Nothing like this has occurred in the city thus far.”

Gabriella seemed like a brick wall in a way. No amount of social games and subtle plays in demeanor or cadence seemed to trigger any sort of change in the woman. Was this how she played the social games needed to hold her positions? Was she ignoring you? Such questions could be asked to your annoyance, but not answered.

“Most certainly. If the other factions aren’t involved, they will be. But demon hunting is the church's domain, our specialty. To do good we act by the will of God, ensure the safety of his flock and that his will is enacted and protected properly. The warriors of the Church have my trust. The gangster and excavators or Magisfair, do not.”

From the sound of things it seemed she wanted to rely on the instantaneous action of the Churches forces before Magisfairs own security, but that did explain why you specifically. After all, the North Star had the Cavalieri d’arme did they not? Warriors with such a noteworthy reputation, they seemed like the first choice.

“There’s a variety of reasons. For a start, you and Charapalos are high ranking and respectable combatants with the strength and expertise necessary to pursue a task as important as this. Of course, I worried two may not be enough, so executors with sufficient power and skill sets without prior engagement were selected to ensure you had support. The regular knights, I’m afraid, are unsuited for this sort of task.”

Gabriella stops for a moment only to seem like she suddenly remembered something.

“Oh, and if you’re wondering about the Cavalieri d’arme. I’m afraid they are distracted by a different concern. I’m afraid the rest must be classified for everyone's safety.”

“Ah, Miss Anima. So she is an associate of yours….. Very well, I shall leave her in your care…..Ahem, and I’ll leave my office open.”

The captain clears her throat a little as she has her subordinate open the gate. Jun give the guard a casual wave as he saunters over.

“Yo, Alice. What’s bringing you all the way out here?”

“We’ve been ordered to greatly up security. There’s been a few strange figure around Magisfair in the past few weeks. After a murder in the north west, the M.S.D has been deployed in full force.”

Alive gestures towards her subordinates who were standing around the gate to HQ.

    “Stay safe out there.”

With a polite nod as she lets you through the gate to the outside street as she wishes you all good luck.

Well there was an awkward question. This one sure didn’t waste time looking to get info. Fortunately, she didn’t guard her secrets with the feverish intensity of many mages.

“I’m… not really anything that special. Just a girl from Zoology who likes birds. …which you probably all guessed hours ago. My name’s Farrah Harcourt. “I’m mostly here to help a friend, but to be honest, I have to admit I’m really curious about the Tomb of Albion. The potential for seeing mysteries, and even phantasmals in person is just so exciting.

“I’m… uh… also the inheritor of my family’s Ornithomagia,” she said, omitting the obligatory addendum of ‘what little I managed to recreate.’

“My specialties are in magecraft that involve birds in some fashion. For instance, I have a few owl feathers here. I wipe one of these across my eyes and I can see clearly in the dark…” she paused, grinning. “…or that’s how it would work if the spell actually did what it was supposed to. Mostly it just makes my eyes look gigantic until I can dispel it. I’m still trying to figure out what I’m doing wrong, but it just doesn’t seem to be happening.”

    She sighed.

“I’ve had a lot of success enhancing my eyesight for distances, though.”

“So, Alina, right? What do you do? You don’t have to make any specifics but, I mean, we’re here in a city where you have no chance of breaking the Masquerade, so there's no harm in sharing a little, right?”

The first thing that pops inside her head is that many cultures sees birds as sacred, such as the vulture goddess Nekhbet of Egyptian religion and the twin ravens the Alfather Odin had in Norse mythology. But as she dives inside that vast mind of her, she remembers that the Goddess of Wisdom and Justice - Minerva often associated with owl. The Owl of Minerva in particular is a famous philosophical metaphor for the mind in Aristotle's Metaphysics.

This Farrah girl must be extremely smart!

Just like every members of my family, I specialized in the Etherlite!" she says while freely controls near invisible fibers on her palm for her peers to see. She thought everyone already knows what the Eltnam can do with Etherlite anyway, there is no need to hide it as long its formula remains hidden.

Without really considering the implications of something as formal and strange as a handshake with a girl, Owen’s body reacted on impulse. It was only when the other shoe dropped concerning what Alina was saying did Owen hurriedly pull his hand away before it could become embarrassingly sweaty.

“Wait, the First!? I didn’t hear anything about this. Why the hell wasn’t that stated from the outset, isn’t that kind of something important to leave out like that…?”

Ugh. It was too early to be losing his composure like this. Or maybe not? If he was going to be traveling with these people, maybe it was for the best that they all saw him at his absolute worst and most neurotic now. It’d make what came later so much easier to explain, but Owen wouldn’t allow himself to be that confident yet.

Adjusting his glasses, the boy looks between Alina and Farrah. One, a headstrong foreigner with the kind of dizzying optimism that Owen loved in his heroes but detested in real life. The other, a plucky girl who seemed resourceful and thought much of her friends.

How was he supposed to compare to all that?

“I…uh, need experience.” He mutters, unsure of where to place his gaze.

“Plus, there’s that rumor of the Witch, right? Everyone hates bringing it up, and if they do it’s always to talk about executing her, it seems. And maybe I’m one of them, I don’t really know yet. What I do know is that I want to see her with my own eyes. I think that’s the least somebody like me can do.”

He trails off as the girls consolidate on what each of them can do, somewhat thankful for the opportunity to shut up again.

Bird magic? There were seemingly tons of applications for something like that. Owen was not so secretly glad at least one of them possessed a foundation that had broad appeal like that. He also knew it was inevitable they asked him what he could do, too. It was perfectly reasonable to want to be aware of the abilities of your comrades in a hell like Albion, right?

If he only had a way to say it clearly.

“As for what I can do, it’s…complicated? That sounds like such an asshole thing to say, and I’m sorry, but it’s difficult to put into words.”

Zipping up a satchel thrown over his shoulder, Mathew interrupts the students chatter to motion then to leave. There was much to do and he wanted to knock out this little errand as efficiently as possible.

Tindal had been politely waiting for the students to prepare themselves but clearly she was ready for them to depart. As the door was opened however, she did seem to have a parting comment.

“Good luck out there. And Owen, feel free to have Wagner accompany you. I think that extra support should keep your spirits high as well Mr. Reid.”

“I don’t think she’s the type to brighten a room but she's not a bother either.”

    Tindal just sighs.

“I forget she’s as depressive as you are. Now hurry along, you’re holding up my schedule.”

Such excuses seemed wholly unnecessary however when the door to the Tindal office finally swung open.

“Now we’re gonna be heading right over, no distractions, you're not tourists….”

Mathew talks to the student behind him before stopping in his tracks as he suddenly sees you standing in the hall.

“Hm? Excuse me, are you here to see Tindal next?”

Ah, there it is – something Charapalos guessed of these two and was admittedly concerned about.
At their request, Charapalos gently raised a hand.

"Ah-ah-ahhh; such fervor and haste are admirable, but I suggest you two remain for now." The Knight-Captain turned to the younger Executor. "Miss Reissford, you will no doubt have the approval from Miss Holzknetch, but it would prove prudent we relay what we know in the security of this chapel before leaving for the scene; Miss Holzknetch may have learned more from her meeting with Grandmaster Gabriella, and the symptoms of demonic possession are best for her to personally acknowledge for her duties as Judge.

"Mister Hopkins, you mentioned 'by my leave,' no? In that case, I formally request you to remain by my side unless stated otherwise. Magisfair is still unknown territory for us, so it is best to tread with due caution; two brains and blades are better than one, after all!"

Both Executors seemed dutiful and, dare he say, "enthusiastic" for their work. Not entirely surprising, given the nature of what personnel this sort of assignment attracts — one will be hard-pressed to find more sensible souls agreeing to join such an ambitious campaign, to put it generously.

Of course, it is not like I am all that sensible myself. Duty aside, it was not like Charapalos had no other reasons to accept this assignment. But whether that reason will be validated remains to be seen.

Still, their eagerness to act can be a problem in itself. In a place so far out of the Church's comfort, haste can pose a risk to tunnel-visioning -- leaving one vulnerable to a quick demise. And amidst so many uncertainties, a dash of caution is more than necessary.

Indeed, for fervor does not equal favor in the eyes of His absoluteness.

Crossing his arms together, the Knight-Captain hummed in thought. From the Spirit Tomb proper, then? This certainly adds up to the rumor they have heard of so far.
'The Witch's domain, a forest where demons dwell'... Even if the Witch herself is false, it is worth delving into to expunge the distortions at least.

"From the depths of Albion, you say... Fascinating! While this does not rule out Generation completely, this does reinforce the path of our eventual venture below." Thinking a bit further, Charapalos asked again. "Out of curiosity Miss Gwyn, have these sightings increased since the rumor of this Witch's forest made itself known? I would imagine the existence of a Witch in such a place would attract a good deal of curious hearts like us."

Again, the theory of parasitic possession is ultimately theory. All they have is the corpse itself and nothing to the process, so it can ultimately be anything that did poor Brayford in – knowing what little of Magi and their myriad mystics, the possibility of a demon-harnessing one is not wholly zero-percent.

Even still, if there is one single link to the rise in demonic sightings, there is credence to such a theory. If Albion is as unforgiving as he has heard, attempts at excavation will naturally lead to some lives lost. And if by possibility some of these souls were felled due to the same possessions, this would explain the possible sightings.

"And pray tell Miss Gwyn, do you have knowledge of those who claim to have seen sights of demonic activity? I do not mean to pressure you, any lead will be of help."
The Act of dozing off in the afternoon is a luxury indeed.
    Coffee would be nice, though.

“It’s just a theory. Why else would a demon thing wanna hang around a love shack?”
“Well, maybe demons want some love too, haha.” Tiffany chuckles in jest.

A shadowy figure with a void for a head… doesn’t seem related to the Dark Forest at all, but could there be some connection I’m missing? It doesn’t seem likely, but…

Either way, she was glad she asked, if only to confirm whether or not it had anything to do with the forest.

“Anyways, a Whitbread Gold… and for you sir, something fruity… fufu, well since we’re talking about love, how about a Sex on the Beach?” She suggests in a cheeky, playful tone.

At the same time, she pulls out her notepad and starts writing in it, as if taking down their orders. In truth, however, she actually jots down the info about Zazel and the shadow she just heard:

    - Zazel’s Love Connections
    - west side of the markets
    - man with a void for a head (vintage radio announcer voice)
    - eats love???

“Alright, I’ll be back with your drinks shortly. Have fun!”

She waves them goodbye and quickly leaves them, having gotten the intel she wanted. As she crosses the main floor to get to the bar and put in the two’s orders, though, she spots someone near the entrance to the hall.

A tall, blond woman with a professional air of elegance.

It takes her a few seconds, but Noelle eventually recognizes the woman as Angelica Durand, one of the people on the list that Luvah gave her. From what Tiffany knew, Angelica was a somewhat famous – or perhaps, infamous – excavator, known for monster hunting. They’d never met formally before, but Tiffany had heard about the woman around town enough times to recognize the woman on appearance alone.

I’m guessing she’s the ‘hired muscle’ Luvah was talking about…

“Ah, hi there! Welcome!” Tiffany quickly greets the woman, immediately changing paths to approach her.

She hastily slides across the main hall towards Angelica’s location, hoping not to miss her, when all of sudden—

    “Ah.”

She slips on a part of the floor that had just been mopped – by herself, no less – and tumbles to the ground, face-first.

    “Blegh!”

    “I’m okay!”

After a moment of motionless intimacy with the ground, she quickly hops back to her feet as if nothing happened.

“Ahahaha, oopsies. That was embarrassing.” She laughs at herself as she calmly and slowly closes the rest of the distance between her and Angelica.

“You’re Angelica Durand, right? It’s nice to meet you. My name is Tiffany White. I thank you for coming all this way.”

She properly greets the blond woman with a gentle, welcoming tone befitting a waitress or perhaps even a maid of a noble household.

“My superiors have already informed of your… assistance in this matter. I’m looking forward to working with you. I may be incompetent, but if there’s anything I can do for you, please do not hesitate to ask.”

She bows politely, as if she were working for Angelica herself, before raising her head and flashing a knowing smile.

“Perhaps, for example, I can get you a drink and a seat to rest in as we wait for our other associates to arrive? Or would you like to speak with Miss Renwick? I’m not sure if she’s in her office right now…”

Ah yes, the children were leaving. Leaving the room and into his tender mercies. Time to do the best to work with them and gain their trust. He took some advice Francesca had given him a while ago. 'If you want people to trust you, give them so much nonsense they don't know what to do!'

He turned away from the idiot guard. He'd have dinner with her later.

"Ah, hello, children. I'm Professor Lynhammer. I was sent by Mrs. Tindal to help escort you and assist you however you can. There's no need for formality, so you can call me Lyn if you wish. I'm afraid that your designated guide was more of a drug addicted lazy imbecile than anyone useful, so I was sent to replace him. There's no worries. I am at your service."

He gave a faintly ridiculous bow before extended his gloved hand to them. They should probably trust him. He was very trustworthy.

Elyra was surprised to hear the Backup Muscle chime in. He seemed more like the quiet brooding type than someone who would proactively contribute to a discussion. Was the Executor more than just a mass of strength, or was he just grandstanding? From appearances alone she doubted he had any information gathering specialization. Elyra turned to examine his expression to try and analyze his motivations.

Unsurprisingly Backup Muscle’s face was tight with disapproval. A mundane eye may have missed the signs, but the tension in his facial muscles as he tried to keep his expression under control clued her in. It was a curious reaction. She tried to follow the logic. Why would he disapprove of her venturing ahead, enough so to want to follow her? A few possibilities spun up in her mind.

Given their lack of any established relationship she doubted he was worried for her safety. She discarded that potential explainer. Possibility 2, he was a competitive type and didn’t want to be shown up. Possibility 3, he may have some misplaced sense of superiority due to his apparent age and assumed greater experience. Possibility 4, he has some level of mistrust for her and doesn’t want her to venture out solo.

Possibility 3 seemed most likely based on her current available facts. Elyra decided that she would have to increase the priority of establishing a hierarchy if this was the case.

As for the other possibilities…. the general course of action for all the most likely ones pointed towards a limited number of optimal actions she could take to resolve the situation.

At any rate, it would be inefficient to be held back by someone who doesn’t fit my criteria of an acceptable superior. Elyra thought to herself.

She filed these thoughts to the back of her mind as Charapalos spoke up again.

Elyra couldn’t help but feel a tinge of impatience at Charapalos’s words, but she stamped it down. An emotional response was a useful guideline but should never be the foundation of an action. She tried to reframe his words to get a better read of his intentions.

It was better to have a careful superior who valued the lives of their subordinates over one that was too reckless. Charapalos most likely wanted to conserve their strength and hedge against unexpected enemies. The rumors of Demonic Possession may be setting him on edge.

Elyra still felt that denying her request for pre-emptive action seemed too cautious. Magisfair was a relatively well populated city with many civilians living in peace. There was unlikely to be any hostile beings capable of threatening an Executor roaming around in the afternoon. The chances of there being one able to take her out even less so.

She considered attempting to persuade him, but given that he gave the Backup Muscle a hard no, she doubted he was amenable to changing his mind. It would be more efficient to circumnavigate his ruling by appealing to Thekla, her direct superior.

Elyra listened to Charapalos converse with Gwyn while considering her next action. It seemed like their current leads were pretty thin. While she didn’t doubt Gwyn’s abilities to carry out a competent autopsy, it doesn’t hurt to add more data to the mix. Another set of senses may pick out what the first missed. Furthermore, this was a chance to utilize some of her unique information gathering capabilities.

“Excuse me Sir Charos, Gwyn. I would like a chance to examine the body myself. It’s possible I can discover something new.”

She stepped over to David's body, standing perfectly still before focusing her sights on it. Her eyes glowed a faint violet as she closely examined the gruesome cadaver from head to toe. She took in horrendous mutations and eldritch growths with a clinical eye. Certainly they were unusual and worthy of eliciting a feeling of disgust.

She discarded the superfluous emotion while continuing with her task. She checked off each previously mentioned facts as she encountered them. The mutated eyes and face, signs of strangulation, missing muscles, hollowed out chest cavity, lack of organs…

Certainly some brutally efficient organism hollowed the body out from the inside. The question was who, or what caused this.

Elyra finished her deep visual inspection in what appeared to be the blink of an eye. There wasn’t that much new information to make note of, but a peculiar detail stuck out to her.

“Has anyone noticed the state of his hands?” Elyra pointed to them briefly before saying, “The nails of the late David’s hands appear to be forming into a shape. A hoof of some kind if I had to guess.”

She moved her hands over the corpse. With a flick of her right hand, she began to deploy her Mana-Threads. 5 invisible strings shot out, one from each finger. As more Threads spooled out her arms began to move together faster and faster, becoming a blur of motion as she weaved her them around David’s body.

The microfilaments moved with an unnatural fluidity, almost like a living liquid. In seconds they went from individual invisible strands to Threads large enough to see with the naked eye. The amount of fine control needed to direct each separately moving strand implied a momentous amount of skill.

With her Threads Elyra was able to render a full 3D image of David’s body with remarkably high resolution. The microfilaments were able to explore every single part of the hollowed out body. Each point of contact sent both tactile and temperature information along the strands. With delicate finesse the Mana-Threads could have mapped out even the shape and condition of David’s organs had he any left.

Elyra’s face was still with concentration as she sorted through the massive torrent of information flowing into her. In truth, she assessed that there was a low probability of discovering a wealth of new information. However in matters of investigation and information gathering, it was better to leave no stone unturned.

She was about to consider her investigation concluded when she finally noticed something amiss. What she found wasn’t anything related to the body itself, but rather something nestled deep within the late David Brayford’s hollowed out chest cavity. A single strand of pure gold hair lay within. It wasn’t growing from his flesh, but just sitting there inside of him.

She controlled her Threads to carefully extract the mysterious object. Once she had a grip on it, she retracted her Mana-Threads and held the golden hair between her thumb and forefinger, presenting it to her companions.

“It seems like I’ve found an out of place object. Does anyone know what this could be?

Elyra's striking violet eyes occasionally emit a faint violet glow. The precision and stillness in which they move and focus seems to imply a greater than normal range of vision.

Elyra is able to deploy and manipulate numerous micro-filaments that seem to appear out of nowhere. Each individual Thread is able to move independently in various directions as if they were alive or being directly controlled by Elyra. The Threads are able to convey extremely detailed tactile information on any objects they touch. They can also sense the ambient temperature of the room through molecular vibrations. Logically sounds can also be carried through the Threads.

    Farrah Harcourt
    Phase 1
Day 1 – Afternoon (New Moon)
Sariel Manor – Outside Tindal’s Office

Owen sounded a little evasive, but she wouldn’t push him too hard. There was still plenty of time for her to ask him about his magecraft later. But before she had much time to consider when it might be a better time to bring up the subject, they encountered… well… huh.

    What in the world…?

Farrah struggled to size up the man standing in the doorway. It was strange. He was dressed appropriately and looked relatively unassuming, but something in the way he presented himself gave the distinct impression of a twitchy rhinoceros viper.

    Guide? Assist?

This greeting sounded like the kind of thing a villain on a cartoon for young children would say to get the cute-animal protagonists to trust them.

And he claimed to be a professor? Well, there were plenty of oddballs teaching at the Clock Tower, so she could believe that. But an escort?

Farrah felt that it was far more likely that she and her fellow students were meant to be escorting him rather than the other way around.

“Did you really send for this…” she bit her tongue before she made a Freudian slip and said ‘creature.’ “…person, professor?”

    Owen Ariafiction
    Phase 1
Day 1 - Afternoon (New Moon)
    Sariel Manor - Tindal Office

As it seemed like the meeting was adjourned, Owen temporarily extricated himself from the rest of the crew to retrieve the school backpack he’d left by the entrance to Elizabeth’s office. Hefting it up, and satisfied with the familiar weight and metallic clinking inside, Owen made the deliberate decision to hang the backpack off of only a single strap. If he was determined to look cool in front of his little group, he had to start somewhere.

This momentary delay held the boy back long enough for him to be the last one to lay eyes on the visitor at the door. Peeking over the heads of Alina and Farrah, he caught the last bit of Lyn’s extravagant display with a grimace.

Off to a stellar start, apparently. Owen’s head snapped back, giving a questioning glance at Tindal, but found no answers there. Or, rather, maybe it was a lack of sympathy. Perhaps he was being too hasty to be judgmental, but his hunches had a habit of turning out mostly correct. Still, it’d be unfair to disregard someone Tindal had clearly selected to help them. Logically, saddling them with a handful wasn’t in anyone’s best interests.

Looking Lyn over, Owen couldn’t get the distinct impression of a shady butler out of his mind. The kind that helped out little old ladies but were secretly embezzling all of their money the entire time. Whatever. Owen could suck it up, at least for now. He made to move forward to introduce himself when the moth from earlier happened to flit by the corner of his vision.

    Don’t. Not yet.

Clearing his throat, Owen instead turned to look at the imposing guardswoman standing right outside the door.

“Wagner, right? Miss Tindal says you’re allowed to come with us. Would you mind, terribly?”
