We'll get another 5 Medusas before we get Perseus at this rate
so how did you guys like the event? Was it a good collab or meh? It looks good to me, and I can't wait to do it in two years.
The Souiken content was good, but overall due to the game being so recent, the references feel more like pure repetition and Iori had to be spoiler-tagged almost beyond recognition because Koei's spoiler policies still don't allow open talk about about Entreat the Darkness.
We could have a good collab, but unfortunately, this one was born in the wrong era.
It's going to be so good in 2 years on NA
September 28: Game came out, Koei says "Kept the True Names of Servant and anything related to the main twist spoiler tagged."
October 12: Rider's face and voice actress no longer need to be spoiler-tagged.
December 21: Saber's True Name no longer needs to be spoiler-tagged. Now only the final chapters and NG+ Digressions need to be spoiler-tagged.
It’s more of an epilogue to Sam Rem than a collab which works well but can leave the FGO aspect wanting a bit, it feels like it’s connections to the Main Story were made to have the FGO onlies invested even though it truly only cared about it’s Sam Rem goobers.
The main plot is kind of just there, very very strong concept but like Comun said it relies too heavily on references to a game too young. Unironically this critique will be far less of a big deal in 2 years when it comes to NA, but as is now causes the middle portion to feel repetitive and lacking in any new information. The end is pretty good though, mostly because it’s so character focused which is where the event excels. Jin is just flat out a great writer and his dialogue is flat out fun, whenever he’s just writing goobers it’s great. On that character aspect I’ll break it down into our 6 Main Sam Rem Reps
Iori: The… oddest one. Iori is meant to take a look at what Iori is like after the events of EtD, with his wish fulfilled his character loses the obsession that defined him which makes him go from True Neutral to Lawful Neutral. He’s still Iori, he’s still the rational thinker who’s not quite the virtuous sort, but still does the right thing because he thinks it makes logical sense. But his dangerous aspect, the fact that he’s willing to do anything for his wish, is gone which means he’s far more harmless now. It’s a good way to take him, and the way it shows him being empty but finding new purpose in being by Saber’s side and finding Chaldea is genuinely sweet and it’s nice to see after the bittersweet feeling of EtD. Musashi coming out to help him also is really nice. That being said, the memory loss is… maybe a bit too far. While yes Iori’s always been one to cut out his excess, and him finally being able to cut out the excess of that wish with it fulfilled and no longer being dominated by it is great, the fact that it comes off as an excuse to skirt around story details is a bit… noticeable. The game takes an “if ya know, ya know” approach to EtD, if you play the game then you know everything it’s talking about, if ya didn’t then play the game to find out. Iori has to kinda… reset a bit because of it though. Notably in his character relationships to other Sam Rem characters which is a shame and will make things more annoying in the long run. Sure eventually it’ll get more or less back to normal after enough time hanging in Chaldea, but it still kinda sucks. And it feels like there’s some opportunity for him to really reflect on EtD that is left ultimately untouched due to this approach. So TLDR; I like how they took his character but I also kind feel like they inhibited him a bit by trying to skirt around EtD with the Memory Loss. I’ve made peace with it but I don’t blame anyone for disliking the decision.
Yamato Takeru: The most unchanged from Sam Rem, mostly because they had so much development there already. They have all their development, and show it off often, which is nice. Their angst about Iori is fun to read in a fucked up sort of way and the event shows off exactly all of Takeru’s good points. Them also going harder in on the idea that Takeru’s just in love with Iori is also something I personally like a lot. I genuinely haven’t been this invested in a Fate ship since like… Angra and Caren?
Chiemon: NPC man, he spends his time doing and saying what he usually does till the end, where him helping out the crew is a good pay off. It kinda says what was already implied in Sam Rem but ya really feel that feeling of sadness and tragedy to him in his final moments. Lancer is in the same camp basically.
Ushi Gozen: Her My Room lines are so fucking good that it’s really a shame they keep having her as a mustache twirler. She’s fine in the event, I hope she gets great interludes and stuff in the future assuming Lasengle hasn’t given up on the idea of interludes.
Yui: The one who gets the most character stuff, her world gets utterly shook after learning Iori’s true nature and I liked seeing that. My interpretation of her My Room lines for Iori is that she’s kinda in that Melt state where her crush is basically gone just with lingering feelings. Iori was not what she was looking for, flat out, she basically found out Santa Claus wasn’t real. Her genuine sorrow at that is nice, and the focus on her ideal and Mori Souiken is nice. She ultimately kinda shows herself to be very Amakusa like which I somehow didn’t pick up on in SR, a well meaning person who’s willing to resort to fucked up means for what they consider helping humanity. I like her a lot more now, and I like that she’s gaining some friends and relationships in Chaldea.
King Ashoka: Bonus, I like him. Ties into Sam Rem themes well. Cool design. Doesn’t really do too much but if he gets added in like a story chapter or something I’d be a fan.
Overall I like it although it does feel “Born in the Wrong Era” like Comun said where it would have benefited from more time removed from Sam Rem. For what it is I like it though, I don’t have any complaints with where they took the characters besides some complicated feelings on Iori’s memory loss.
Like a 7-8, gets a point added in 2 years when it comes to NA and doesn’t have the recency bias issue.
I didn't think I'd be bumping this up again, But Lasengle announced OC 2 in late march. This means that OC 2 will not be during golden week.
Now we know golden week won't be a dead week, that would be stupid. So either there is another Collab event or there will be some other event during that time. So we are back to speculation. Will there be another Collab or will it be another event?
