Pretty sure these issues are only on the PC version. Just set the PC version to JP locale (just like the good old days) and it's all good. The Switch version reportedly works just fine.

I definitely hope the localizers managed to save us another 20 years of discourse over it though.


This was kind of my job on the Ultimate Patch(tm), at the time I had a system set up where I was comparing the PC and RN scripts side by side in Beyond Compare or similar but I don't know if I still have the files for it.
Basic summary: anything that could remotely be construed as sexual removed (including eg Taiga commenting on Sakura's body or Shirou being conscious of Rin pressing her chest against him in the alley in that one scene), gore toned down (including things like descriptions of dismemberment which were made more vague as to what was going on), girls shouldn't fight type lines removed, The Shinji Stuff (nearly every line of dialogue he says to Sakura in HF is changed), references to insanity removed (mental health stigma I guess, for years we actually thought the way Mad Enhancement worked had been retconned in RN because of one of these instances), lines describing a character's tone of voice rendered redundant by the addition of voice acting removed, general editing for better flow or to remove random asides that don't contribute much (Shirou infodumping about carbon bows or the infamous "alarm clocks are degenerate")

It’s a shame the positive script changes like removing redundancy were packaged with weird ones like being void of anything sexual and flat out negative like HF in general. Did you think the Realta Nua changes negatively impacted the game a good amount or was it in the end mostly fine?

Reportedly it was fixed for the Switch with the 1.1 patch that came out at launch.

Overall I think they're fine, things like the toned-down gore are not very noticeable unless you're directly comparing the scripts, except yeah HF kinda suffers. In particular I remember the scene the morning after Shirou and Sakura have sex the first time stuck out, since they're going like "omg I feel so awkward after last night ��" when nothing happened except blood-drinking.

This is common with all-ages VN ports in general, I really wish there was more room for a grey area between "hardcore onscreen fucking" and "the concept of sex does not exist", especially for stories where the fact that characters have sex with each other kind of matters. (Kimi ga Nozomu Eien etc). Like at least let them talk about it having happened offscreen.

From the English fan perspective it feels like a big deal since it's the first official translation, but from the Japanese perspective it's kinda just another port of a game that has been ported 5 times, hence the low price, lack of physical release, "return to where it all began" tagline etc. From that perspective I think the English translation is kind of an afterthought.

That's a real shame, a physical release would have been very nice.

Damn all the good stuff, how else am I supposed to know Shirou's random thoughts.

But yeah wish there was a version that at least kept in the sexual themes and explicit violence. I remember the bloody Rin CG from near the end of Fate route was severely toned down as well.

I've been reading Date a Live Rinne Utopia and this is funny. Because that's a console release of a non-hentai franchise and Kurumi's ending has her without clothes on Shido's bed and the dialogue is clear about sex (they don't say sex directly, but it's super obvious given the lines used), and then it timeskips to not show more than the anime and LN do. If DAL can figure a way to do the off-screen sex thing and not get in any trouble, then why can't TM or others
