Perhaps, but it's worth pointing out they're not destroying this food because of distribution issues, they're doing so specifically to keep prices up.

That said, it's an utterly disgusting waste that comes from the way we handle resources and commerce globally. When the supply chain breaks down, there's just not enough places to store goods, especially perishables and things you can't really stop producing, like foodstuffs.

In hindsight it could be mitigated to a degree by building redundancies into storage capacity, which is where the Capitalism angle starts to really be felt, since doing so isn't cost-efficient for the private sector or the public, even when it's feasible. In a command economy, you could just force it in preparation for possible disasters. I mean, just look at China's growth-inflating public works projects; a lot of whst they produced has little practical utility under normal circumstances, but could be invaluable in the right kind of crisis.

And this is what people miss when they see China's numbers and go "FAKE NEWS!!!". No, they are not fake, or at least not by a sizable margin. You don't open a city under total lockdown as a face-saving display of resilience, that's retarded, even for reputation worrywart CCP officials. Either it's indeed contained, or they've just gone insane. Since they did report an absurd number back when everyone treated it as small fry, I genuinely doubt it's the latter.

To be honest, command economies didn't work because the guys over at Moscow HQ can't accurately assess whether salami and breadloaf are in high demand in a faraway remote Novaya Zemlya Selo or how the Cubans can feed their people but the stores always fall short of the supply because they don't keep tabs on which product they are buying daily and then send the data back. However, with development of cloud computing, I'm honestly surprised no one's given it a shot. Now it would be as easy as saying "send x200 breadloafs to this store and then text back "send 50 back" and do both in 20 minutes back to the distro center". This goes DOUBLE for non perishable foodstuffs you could just stow into a cool truck and ship to the nearest charity.

I swear the only testbed we ever had, Cybersim, died because the US Banks knew if it made a command economy work in Chile, America would be doomed. It's one thing to fight the nomenklatura. It's a different one when you can charge rock bottom prices for a high demand product AND STILL make enough of a profit without relying on destructive development and distribution tactics.

Remember, the USSR was growing all the way to Perestroika. It never really went into recession. Stagnation at 1.7 percent was about as slow as that economy would get... at least until it finally crashed.

Man, I'm in Spain and I just can't fathom how badly USA is fucking up the COVID situation.

I usually withhold my opinion on Trump, but after the current snafu, anyone who believes the guy belongs in office (or any position of power, really) is severely delusional.

I kind of wonder. Trump, for his many many faults, is a man who understands stories. I feel like he just wants to pressure fauci into falling into line. Don’t quote me on that but for all his reliance on impulse and gut instinct, I think trump would be reluctant going fire him because he knows if he fires fauci and later we have a second outbreak, Democrats will portray that as a major failing.
