What is art but pointer to the transcendental? To tear down the statue means to assume that the soul resides within it, when it does not. Tearing down the statue does not undo the person's accomplishments. It gets them out of sight. That's all it does, and that's all it's about.

Because obviously the Auschwitz Memorial has statues commemorating (an important distinction you're deliberately leaving out) Hitler and Mengele, of course.

So what? He did accomplish positive things during his life. Like I keep saying about HP Lovecraft, I know for a fact that he was a racist, but I still enjoy his writings. If people are damaging any sort of property, then they should be dealt with properly. While lethal force is not allowed, they should experience as much nonlethal force as needed, then imprisonment and/or fines. Of course, if they respond to the nonlethal force with lethal force, then you bump that up to lethal force.

That's not just an incredibly prejudiced and egotistical viewpoint, it's patently wrong (because it's not as if the protesters have gone on a statue-tearing fender bender throughout the world, they very specifically targeted the statues of slavers and colonialists).

Also, it's less the crime and more whether the actual private or public organization can be shamed into not pressing charges. What's disgusting is that several companies have come out in support of the same thugs who destroyed their businesses. If someone commits a crime upon you, you get them arrested, fined, and/or imprisoned.
