Honestly, I don't think there is a single heroic spirit that would turn down the chance to accept a summoning unless they have some compelling reason to divorce themselves from the world. Because EMIYA decided he wanted to kill himself because of his reading material and most heroic spirits probably don't even HAVE any reading material. So it's like EMIYA's torment turned up to 11.

Well, no, because EMIYA's problem is that he understandsd that he is being betrayed by his ideal. It's not boredom, and I'm not even sure that's a relevant concept in the extra-temporal existence of the Throne.

I thought it went: EMIYA is a copy of a kill-bot re-granted self-awareness through the Grail.

I dunno, I can see reasons for not wanting to be summoned. I mean, sure you might be able to get a wish, but there certainly are Heroic Spirits who probably have nothing really to wish for and just want to chill out and do nothing. The Throne should have decent Wi-Fi access, so not much is lost.

Does the spirit even have a choice if he's summoned with a catalyst?

We've never seen a Servant summoning fail so far, so it's a purely theoretical limitation.

Pretty sure Cu just wants to rumble. Not-Kojirou vowed to kill birds, and dead people can't kill birds. Medea wanted the grail to grant her a husband. Lancelot...wants to say sorry (in the most awkward way possible) I guess? Herc...I have no idea.

Kojiro doesnt really dislike birds or anything, he killed them to get tsubame gaeshi an he already finished that during lifetime; he just came because beeing a servant is still better than beeign a wraith. maybe somethng similar to this- "im bored in the throne, wanna see the modern world and im only sending a copy so why not" is the main reason why every servant always answers?

Heya, BL people. First post (ever), and first made-up Servant (ever). Opinions are welcome.

    Servant: Rider
    Spirit: Gwyn ap Nudd
    Alignment: Chaotic Neutral

    Strength: C
    Endurance: D
    Agility: B
    Mana: C
    Luck: C
    Noble Phantasm: A

    Profile:

Appearance: Rider is a tall, slender but muscular, pale and handsome man with pointy ears, ice-blue eyes and medium-length silver hair. Dark blue Fairy Letters are tattooed along various parts of his body to form simple animal designs such as claw marks and foot prints. His appearance can best be described as "otherworldly". In his battle attire, Rider is far from heavily armoured, donning a simple leather kilt and leather boots along with a makeshift mantle held on his shoulders with a simple cord, and connected to his kilt with a diagonal leather belt. The mantle seems to have been skinned from a grey-furred predator, probably a wolf, as a tail and claws dangle from its back end and rest on Rider's shoulders. However, his most striking accoutrement is the stag skull he wears as a makeshift helmet. Its golden antlers are huge and perfectly intact. In addition, Rider's face is painted black when he wades into combat, augmenting his terrible battle mien.

Background: Rider's identity is Gwyn ap Nudd, the legendary hero of Welsh mythology who was king of the Tylwyth Teg (the "Fair Folk"), ruler of the otherworld of Annwn, and leader of the Wild Hunt.

He is the son of Nudd Llaw Eraint, a legendary king of Britain who was the son of Beli Mawr, himself another legendary British ruler. Gwyn's mother was the fairy queen of Annwn, who could not leave her otherworldly abode and so left her husband Nudd to take care of Gwyn and his siblings. Gwyn grew up to be a skilled hunter who delighted in battle and the rush of the hunt. Later in his youth, he returned to Annwn and ascended its throne to rule by his mother's side as its king. It is in his capacity as ruler of Annwn and psychopomp that Rider would later have many epic adventures and meet with other heroic spirits.

One of his earliest conflicts is when his sister Creiddylad was engaged to be wed to Gwythyr ap Greidawl, one of the knights of King Arthur Pendragon. Gwyn objected to this marriage, stating that Gwythyr was unfit to marry the king of Annwn's sister, and abducted her to Annwn. In retalliation, Gwythyr raised a great host against Gwyn, leading to a vicious battle between the two. Gwyn was victorious and, following the conflict, captured a number of Gwythyr's noblemen including Nwython and his son Cyledr. Gwyn would later murder Nwython, and force Cyledr to eat his father's heart. As a result of his torture at Gwyn's hands, Cyledr went mad, earning the epithet Wyllt. After Arthur's intervention, and the aid of the wizard Merlin, Gwyn and Gwythr are mystically bound to fight for Creiddylad every May Day until the end of time. The warrior who was victorious on this final day would at last decide the maiden's fate.

Later on, the hero Culhwch, a cousin of King Arthur, must complete a number of seemingly impossible tasks given to him by the giant Ysbaddaden, father of Culhwch's love interest Olwen, before he can win her hand. One of these tasks is to retrieve the comb and scissors from the head of the vicious boar, Twrch Trwyth. As it is impossible to hunt the boar without otherworldly aid, Gwyn is called upon by King Arthur to join his retinue against the Monstrous Beast. Joining him in this expedition is Gwyn's rival, Gwythyr. Always lusting for a good hunt, Gwyn agrees to assist them, and his weapons greatly help in subduing the beast after a vicious battle. Gwyn later rejoins Arthur, Gwythyr and the other knights on another quest to retrieve the blood of the infernal witch Orddu. Gwyn would greatly respect Arthur after these adventures, and, due to his fey heritage, was one of the few people who discovered Arthur's true identity as a woman.

Personality: Rider is mercurial, wild, proud and thirsts for war. He greatly enjoys battle and conflict, to the extent that despite being bound by Arthur to an eternally renewing duel he loses interest in bearing him ill will, instead focusing on the chance to continuously battle a hated rival. Of course, as a fay king he is also very vain, vindictive and wrathful, gladly going to extremes in dealing with an enemy or someone he sees as having slighted him... at least until a new target presents itself.

Rider gladly answers the summons of the Holy Grail, as his only wish is to battle as many legendary heroes as possible in glorious battles. Due to this, and despite his libertine mentality, he will greatly assist his Master in the Holy Grail War. However, that same mentality will also prevent him from complying with a Master he sees as not up to his standards or who issues orders that run counter to his goals and personality.

    Abilities:

Rider prefers to battle mounted, using his wide-reached weapons to gain an advantage in melee combat over grounded or far away foes. His main weapon is his spear, though he is also armed with a bow and arrows. The spear's head and the arrows are made of lunargent, the magical faerie metal of Annwn, which grants them a rank up in damage against Phantasmal Species. While they are not proper Noble Phantasms they are still powerful spirit weapons. A favoured tactic of Rider is overwhelming opponents with summoned creatures and apparitions using his Summoning and Psychopomp skills (see below).

    Class Skills:

Magic Resistance grants protection against magical effects. Different from the Resistance effect that merely rejects prana, this ability cancels spells altogether. It is important to note that the term "verse" below refers to a set of three incantation lines.
C: Cancel spells with a chant below two verses. Cannot defend against Magecraft on the level of High-Thaumaturgy and Greater Rituals. As a king of the fae, Gwyn boasts a fair level of Magic Resistance.

Riding is the expertise to ride animals & vehicles, and to enhance one's chosen mount.
    A+
: Creatures on the level of Phantasmal Beast and Divine Beast can be used as mounts. However, that does not apply to members of the Dragon Kind.

Summoning is a skill that allows one to magically call upon creatures from faraway places or even other realms. Only creatures the Servant has deep affinity with can be summoned. Though it is a Class-specific skill of the Rider Class, not all Riders possess it.
A+: Creatures on the level of Phantasmal Beast and Divine Beast can be summoned. However, that does not apply to members of the Dragon Kind. In Gwyn's case, he can call upon any of the fey beasts of Annwn, which vary from spectral owls to goblin hounds. These creatures range from Monstrous Beasts to low-rank Phantasmal Beasts with E-Rank Magic Resistance, depending on the prana expenditure. Summoning Gwyn's personal mounts does not fall under this skill, as they count as his Noble Phantasms. However, he can summon only one of the spectral hounds of Cŵn Annwn (see below) using this skill, though the prana cost is much higher than with lesser fey beasts.

    Personal Skills:

Battle Continuation is the strength of vitality to remain strong in trials. Also, the ability to withdraw from combat and reach allied territory alive after being defeated.
A: The Servant can fight even with deadly injuries and can remain alive so long as he does not receive a decisive fatal wound. Gwyn's lust for battle and status as a war psychopomp grants him increased endurance in combat.

Divinity is the measure of one's Divine Spirit aptitude. At high levels one is treated as a mixed race of a Divine Spirit, and the level declines when the Heroic Spirit's own rank as a Monstrous or Demonic Beast rises. It can also decrease due to dislike for, or disfavour with, the gods. It also has an effect which reduces special defensive values called "purge defense" in proportion to its Rank. It can break through Skills such as Protection of the Faith.
C: The Rank of a hero considered many times as a minor deity. Gwyn was half-fae, and also later considered a full Welsh god in various sources.

Independent Action is the ability to remain independent even when rejecting prana from a Master and to remain materialized for extended periods of time in this world without a Master. The downside is that the Servant can be harder to control & keep by the Master's side.
B: Capable of remaining in this world for two days without an established contract. Also capable of living on for a short period of time after suffering extensive damage to his spiritual core. Gwyn's otherworldly nature and fae personality grant him a fair measure of independance and autonomy.

Psychopomp is an ability that allows the Servant to safely store the souls of the dead in his own possession to either be guided to other realms or used for other, more nefarious, purposes. It is a rare skill that is the province of those heroes who acted as guides of the dead. Combined with the Summoning skill (see above), a Servant can call upon these souls as wraiths under his command.
A+: The Servant can store up to 1000 souls. He can also forcefully rip a soul from a live target with but a touch. In addition, anyone slain by the Servant has their soul automatically taken into his possession. This ability has no effect on other Servants. Gwyn ap Nudd took up the mantle of psychopomp later on in his life, guiding the souls of many fallen British warriors to the otherworld or adding them to his Wild Hunt.

Protection of the Fairies is a blessing from Elementals; the capacity to increase one's Luck in dangerous situations. Activation is limited to battlefields, where it is possible to perform feats of arms.
A+++: The Servant gains 1 Rank-Up and a +++ modifier to his Luck in battlefields. As king of the otherworld and son of its previous queen, Gwyn can call upon immense fortune on the battlefield.

    Noble Phantasms:

Du y Moroedd: Black Charger of the Horizon is Rider's personal war horse and most trusted steed, capable of performing a missile-like charge at enemies.
    Type: Anti-Army
    Rank: C+
    Range: 2-50
    Max. Target Number: 30 people
Originally a wild black horse in Arthur's possession, it would not let any mere mortal ride it. When preparing to hunt for the Twrch Trwyth, none of the non-magical steeds could handle the otherworldly presence of Gwyn ap Nudd, except for Du, whose monstrous strength was sufficient for the fae king.

The horse usually serves as a simple mount for Rider, who almost always rides into battle atop it. It is capable of extremely fast charges, equivalent to an attack boosted by A-Rank Agility, allowing Rider to easily tackle many Servants. It also has a high physical endurance, equivalent to C-Rank, and D-Rank Magic Resistance, owing to its metamorphosis from a mere Monstrous Beast to a Phantasmal Beast as a result of years spent with Rider and in the otherworld of Annwn. Even though it can't truly fly, Du y Moroedd can leap supernaturally vast distances and can freely walk on any surface of water.

The true use of the Noble Phantasm, however, comes when its name is magically invoked, transforming its rush attack into that of a siege engine with the speed of a missile. The attack is very powerful and fast, capable of destroying large parts of the surroundings as well as grievously hurting Servants who can't avoid it. The downside to the attack is that it is in a straight line and cannot turn to accomodate targets outside its trajectory, requiring forethought and more than a bit of luck to execute perfectly, something Rider is in no shortage of.

Cŵn Annwn: the Wild Hunt is Rider's trump card, and his main Noble Phantasm, stemming from his legend as leader of the spectral hunting army.
    Type: Anti-Army
    Rank: A+++
    Range: 1-99
    Max. Target Number: 500 people
Using this Noble Phantasm, Rider summons the 100 or so spectral hounds of Annwn to tear apart his enemies. These hounds are gigantic white wolves at the rank of Phantasmal Beast. Their eyes are blood-red, and the tips of their ears, their muzzles and their claws are all stained with blood. When summoned, the hounds viciously rend all designated targets in a large area, with Rider leading the mad assault. The attack's strength lies not in the power of a specific hound, but in the sheer speed and number of them rushing opponents, allowing to overwhelm even the strongest of enemies. The hounds share Rider's Psychopomp ability, allowing any victims killed in their feral onslaught to be revived as apparitions that participate in the next Wild Hunt, riding the hounds of Annwn as wild ghostly knights. Unlike the normal Psychopomp ability, the Cŵn Annwn can take pieces of defeated Servants as well. These are not the true Servants however, but merely powerful apparitions in their shape, with all their stats at E-Rank and none of their skills or Noble Phantasms.

Notes: I know he's basically just a pretty Cú Chulainn as Rider, and his NPs are basically just watered down Bellerophon and Ionioi Hetairoi, but I had fun making him up, especially his Summoning and Psychopomp skills. I'm kinda thinking Psychopomp should be a full NP instead of just a really powerful skill, though.

I wager that the few heroes who got a legitimate GOOD END might not care enough to answer a summons. They lived a good, long life and probably don't have much reason to go back into the mud and blood of war when they have such a swanky afterlife.

Did Rider (Medusa) even have a wish when she was summoned though? I thought it was only afterwards she decided to do her best to save Sakura.

Right, this is my first post here. Please go easy on me.

    Servant: Saber
    True Name: Le Loi
    Alignment: Chaotic/Lawful Good.
    Gender: Male

    Parameters
    + Strength: C
    + Endurance: A
    + Agility: B
    + Mana: D
    + Luck: B-

    Class Skills:
    + Magic Resistance: C.
    + Riding: B

    Personal Skills:
    + Battle Continuation: B-
    + Charisma: B

    Noble Phantasm:
Thuan Thien: The Will of Heaven.
    Type: Anti-Unit. Rank: B

A glowing sword with imbued magical power, should it be activated, it will make the user taller, also augmenting his strength and speed in the process. It passive ability include a small protection against magic, hence Le Loi's magic resistance being C instead of D. Also, due to it being the property of a Dragon King who's primary domain is water, this sword will never rust when put under water.

Le Loi's most renowned weapon. During the early days of his rebellion against the Ming Empire, Le Loi was unable to muster the required military forces to match the Chinese and was thus forced conduct guerilla warfare. Seeing his predicaments, a local God - the Dragon King - decided to lend the sword to Le Loi. The sword however, would be split in two parts: The blade - found by a fisherman by the name of Le Than who would later join Le Loi's army - and the hilt - found by Le Loi himself when he was running from the enemy. With the sword, he was able to rally people under his banner, and it also brings him one victory after another. One years after his ascension to the throne however, during his cruise around the lake in front of his palace, a golden turtle rose up and asked in a human voice that he returns the weapon to the rightful owner - the Dragon King. Le Loi complied with the request, lobbing the sword towards the turtle. The turtle snatched the sword from the air with its teeth and descended back into the lake.

Le Lai: The Warrior Who Saved The Emperor
    Type: Support

A special Noble Phantasm. Should Le Loi be facing a crushing defeat, this ability will automatically kicks in. Le Lai, the warrior in question, will dress up as Le Loi and took his lord's place, fighting the opponent while Le Loi retreats. However, whether he wins or lose, Le Lai will automaticaly dies afterward. As such, this only works once per summon.

This come from an old tale. During Le Loi's early days, one mountaintop battle saw his forced surrounded and on the verge of defeat. Facing with the possibilities of a crushing defeat, not for just this battle but for the rebellion as a whole, Le Lai came up with a plan: He would dresses as Le Loi, leading a group of soldiers who were also willing to die on a suicide mission against the Ming army. The group was killed, but Le Loi and the majority of the force managed to escape. Afterward, Le Loi made sure to remember Le Lai's actions, going so far as ordering that Le Lai's memorial being held one day before his own. Le Loi passed away on the 22 August, thus Le Lai's memorial would be held on the 21st. The phrase "21 Le Lai, 22 Le Loi came from this legend".

    Identity:

Saber's true identity is that of Le Loi - also known as Le Thai To - one of Vietnam's greatest heroes. Born the youngest of three in a aristocratic family, Le Loi's legend began when he chose to rebel against the Ming Empire that he chosen to establish sovereignty over Vietnam. At first, his rebellion only enjoyed patchy success but overtime, more and more people joined his cause, many of them talents like Nguyen Trai, Tran Nguyen Han, Le Sat, etc... 10 years after the start of the rebellion, in 1427, after the victory at Chi Lang, China was forced to acknowledge Vietnam's independence. Le Loi was then crowned Emperor of Dai Viet. He would continue to rule for 6 years, passing away because of illness in 1433.

See for example 5th Hassan's desire to be remembered, 4th Hassan's desire to become fully integrated and so forth.
Pretty sure Cu just wanted to fight other Heroic Spirits and such.

Gil doesn't "want/need" anything because he thinks everything of 'value' belongs to him already; he only answered the call because he was bored and he wants to see if the Grail has any value so he can say it was his all along.

    No clue what Herc wanted.

I have no clue what Koujirou wanted either, but, given he was just an ordinary farmer in life (save for his physics-raping technique), he might have just wanted to rumble with real Heroic Spirits to see what they were like. Its like, imagine you were a talented but unrecognized player in high school and college, and suddenly, years after you had hung up your uniform, you're asked to compete in an All-Stars game; you don't question it, you're just glad you get the chance to cross swords with the famous pros to see where you measure up and fall short.

Really? Koujirou didn't strike me as a family man. Jeez, you'd think his kids would be monsters if they were anywhere near as OCD about wildlife as he was...

Rider wanted to see her sisters again IIRC.

@ Obsidian Pharoah - I actually thought he was pretty cool. You did a great first job, and the pack of ghost wolves reminds me of one of my favorite Bleach villains, Starrk.

@ Ihklan - I rather liked the kagemusha NP, though I think it could use more details (like what are Le Lai's stats and does he just take Le Loi's place when he's about to die or can he fight and potentially win himself; if he did manage to win despite the odds can Le Loi summon him again, etc.). More interesting than his Arondight-lite sword anyway. My only real complaint is you haven't given us anything on his personality and why he is willing to participate in the HGW.
