    4. Try to communicate with the zombie: Ask who is speaking to her (in case someone is communicating to her using the zombie as a medium), if it knows if the people inside are safe, and where specifically Rider is.

    Optional:

    + IF/THEN
IF communication fails, THEN go to the Church.
IF communication succeeds, THEN try to find Rider, and take out one of his ever-present Nazi soldier minions from a distance in order to acquire a Proof of Hero.

The Act of dozing off in the afternoon is a luxury indeed.
    Coffee would be nice, though.

No two churches are the same.

Maria stands inside the oldest South American Protestant church with a bell tower. Certainly, the atmosphere in this church differs from the one she visited the previous day. It is not some centuries-old gothic cathedral, but there is a stronger impression of “age” and “tradition” unseen in the admittedly plainer church of Father Scherer.

“Dein Wort ist meines Fußes Leuchte und ein Licht für meinen Pfad,” she reads elegantly written on the base of the wide wooden balcony.

“Well, yeah, I could use some guidance.”

Of course, Maria is not so dumb as to not notice: this church, too, has been somehow spared the initial flash-freeze that struck the whole city. Its windows and doors are undamaged. The obvious question rises in her head: is it all churches that were spared, or is it merely a coincidence, and the two spared buildings she has found happen to be churches?

    “So, under the balcony, huh.”

Needless to say, the church is empty. No priest or anybody else showed up to meet her. There are no ice blocks, either. Father Scherer was spared along with his church—was he spared because he was in the church, or like they hypothesized, was it because…?

The Father claimed he is not an Executor of the Holy Church, but that does not necessarily exempt him from wielding the Sacraments. Then, what about the people of this church? Were they not spared because they do not belong to the church of Rome? Are they just frozen somewhere in the building behind the church’s main chamber? Or maybe they just did not hear her opening the door?

Stopping herself before she gives herself a headache, Maria rudely and noisily settles her butt on the first row of seats under the ornate wooden balcony. Very little light seeps in through the windows; she is almost entirely cloaked in shadow, like most of the building’s interior, actually.

A very good place for a clandestine meeting.

“I beg you, please don’t try to come up here.”

Maria has to swallow her heart back down her throat. There was nobody here a moment ago!

“Bad things will happen if we meet face to face. So, please.”

Clenching her rapidly beating chest, she glares at the ceiling over her head, and at the unseen person speaking from atop the balcony. A woman; young, perhaps even younger than she is.

“Bad things for you or for me?”

“Pretty bad for me, that’s for sure,” Maria hears, followed by a sound similar to the one she made when she fell on her current seat. “As for you, um, not really sure, but at least a little bad.”

Silence ensues for a few seconds. Maria can’t figure out what the other girl is waiting for, and she is not nearly as patient.

    “So, Assassin.”

“Yup. The Assassin of the Black Sun, at your service.” Maria can easily imagine a hand being waved dismissively; that’s how matter-of-factly the other voice sounds. “Guess it wasn’t hard to figure out.”

“You’ve got one nasty-ass Presence Concealment. That’s at least A-rank.”

“Isn’t it? The one thing in this Saint Graph I can be proud of. Everything else is just plain disgusting. But anyway, we haven’t got all the time in the world.”

Maria frowns, readying herself for whatever this Servant has to tell her.

“First thing first: I’m not on your side, Maria Westinghouse.”

Maria has to bite her lip to hold herself from demanding how she knows her name. She feels she is being provoked, and like hell she’d fall for that shit.

“The only reason I’m helping you is because you’re my best shot at keeping Javier alive through this mess.”

    Javier.

Again, it comes back to her “battery”—and that’s when it clicks.

“You’re the one who healed him.”

    “Yeah.”

    “So, what’s your deal?”

    A pause. Assassin’s voice drops.

“He did something for me, fifteen years ago. It was kind of a big deal, to me. So, I’m repaying that favor. That’s it.”

    Another, shorter pause.

“Tha—That’s all of it, got it? No matter how much Caster says otherwise.”

There’s a bit more muttering Maria cannot quite catch.

“Um, okay? No, wait,” Maria corrects herself as she catches the odd detail. “Fifteen years ago? Girl, you sound fifteen years old.”

    “I age differently, okay? I’m twenty-six.”

And that’s when it clicks again.

    “Wait, you’re like me.”

    “You mean Pseudo-Servant? Yeah.”

And then a third click. Maria’s on a roll.

    “You’re the zombie master!”

“Oh God, I hate that name already.”

“What the fuck!?” exclaims the sword girl, jumping to her feet in outrage.

The response to that is a sigh that makes Maria growl.

“Girl, I didn’t come here to hear you yell like a lunatic. Can we have a conversation here?”

    “You killed all those people!”

“No, the magical ice and cold killed all those people. I just took perfectly serviceable corpses and made them my familiars to create a surveillance network, because if I don’t follow orders I’ll die.”

Assassin lets the words simmer for a couple seconds.

“My life’s pretty shit, but I very much like being alive. Now that we’ve got that clarified, next question?”

Maria gruffly falls back on the church seat, crossing her arms in dissatisfaction.

    “…so, when you said Rider’s watching…”

“Yes, I meant I was watching, and I am under orders to keep track of your location at all times.”

It is like a bucket of ice-cold water dumped on Maria’s head.

    “Fuck, there are zombies everywhere.”

“Yup. You’re pretty fucked, no matter where you go.”

Of course, Maria’s worries do not extend solely to herself.

    “Shit, Javier—”

“Yes, Rider knows you spent the night at that hotel. No, he does not know about Javier, or his connection to you.”

A heavy pause. Maria can feel waves of some sort of intent radiated from the balcony above.

“He won’t find out from me.”

Maria hears the impatient sound of a feet tapping wood.

“Look, girl, we don’t have all the time in the world. Ask you questions, but let me tell you right now: I’m under a whole package of magical bindings. I can’t say anything that would reveal the identities of my Master or the other Servants.”

With that warning, the baton has been passed to Maria. Assassin is right, they don’t have all the time in the world. Therefore, what she should do is…?

    Choice Time
Maria has found a new chance to acquire valuable information, through yet another of Javier’s odd acquaintances. Seriously, it’s almost too convenient, to the point she is waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Maria may pick up to TWO choices from the following:

    1. Ask about the Singularity and the ice blocks.
    2. Ask about the Servants Maria has “met”: Rider, Lancer, and Archer.
    3. Ask about the unknown Servants: Saber, Caster, and Berserker.
    4. Ask about the Herald of Fimbulwinter.
    5. Ask about Assassin herself.
    6. Maria has no patience for secretive bullshit. Jump to the balcony and make Assassin face her.
    7. Write-in.

    7. Ask about Javier

    - - - Updated - - -

Also 6 is bad because 6 will probably geis Assassin into fighting Maria to the death or calling for backup or something equally unpleasant.

Hmm, if Assassin controls the zombies, then why did that Zombie choke out Javier? Tsundere grumpiness? Orders from above? Someone else has keys to the zombies? Zombie instincts while she was distracted?

Not the other Servants... But is she willing to talk about herself? I doubt it, but maybe it's worth a shot?

    Well, I'm picking 1 and 5.

Wow, everyone seems rather divided on the choices.

    That said, I'm choosing 1 & 4.

4 and 5. Not sure if the Herald counts as one of "the other Servants", but it may be worth a shot.

    Servant Deduction

    • At certain points throughout the Quest, whenever the Main Characters discuss the issue of Servants, participants in the Quest can influence this discussion by presenting their own speculations on the identities of the Servants in Fimbulwinter.
    • Naturally, correctly deducing an unknown Servant’s identity is a boon to our protagonists, regardless of whether they wish to befriend the Servant, or defeat them, even if the nature of that boon is unclear at first glance.

    So, here's your first chance.

Present your deductions on the identities of the Herald of Fimbulwinter and the Assassin of the Black Sun, if any.
