I'm glad I take a subject where turning in a translation written in Shakespearean English is a valid style choice.

No, I mean, I was taking second and third year Japanese classes concurrently with English linguistics and poetry classes. I don't think I'll ever forgive English for being so much of a mess and I don't think I'll ever forgive Japanese for murderfying my GPA.

On the flip side, as my girlfriend works on her English Labo essays I know exactly why she phrases certain things because of the thinking-in-Japanese-but-writing-in-English problem and feel like a pro at finding those errors. It can't be helped.

Ah I see. For me, not using English in any academic context for almost 2 years definitely affected my English writing. I had to write some medical and history papers and my writing style was way out of whack. Everything read incredibly awkwardly and I was using turns of phrase that just sounded bizarre. Like double and triple negatives...

I would have been OK with it if I had actually gotten really really good at writing in Japanese, but I didn't, so it was just frustrating. It was probably more that the professors just kept giving me harder and harder stuff, so I never felt like I was comfortably good at the language. I probably did get better.

On the bright side it's perfectly OK to be super dry in scientific writing, so I was good there.

    English: Never use passive sentences!
Japanese: Everything when translated sounds like a passive sentence!

As not a writer myself what I hate most is having to rewrite everything with proper pronoun use when the Japanese is dropping proper names every goddamn sentence like it's nobody's business and then you have to go and rewrite even more because everybody's the same gender and you have to figure out a way to keep the antecedents straight without repeating yourself so much that it sounds like butt or being too confusing.

I like when the tense changes every other sentence and you tell yourself you're going to translate them all as the same tense but eventually you just start forgetting to do it at all.

I assign characters from random US shows to the characters in whatever and work from there.
My internal Arika was House (that didn't work too well).

I've been trying to kick the habit. I think I managed to keep FSF in consistent tense this time around.

I've gotten to the point with LEM2 where I barely even read the tense markers on the sentence when I translate them. That's gonna come around to bite me in the ass real soon...

This is all some ploy to make me translate Mahoyo faster to make you stop butchering it, right?

(Is ploy the right word here?)
