It's more complex than that. He killed Russian soldiers with whatever weapon he could use at the moment, the Mosin Nagant just happened to be the most famous (submachine guns were also a tool of his). It wasn't even a sniper rifle. He didn't have a scope or a spotter (he felt that they messed up his hunter's instincts too much) and just used the iron sights.
The estimated kill count he racked up over the entire winter war is over 700. It was due to more than just marksmanship. He used his knowledge of the local terrain, his prey stalking skills he learned as a hunter, and survival techniques to work on his own or with a group. The Russian soldiers were terrified of him for good reason. Entire counter sniper teams were deployed to kill him, and Russian artillery was order to barrage any area that he was rumored to be hiding in.
He was finally taken off the line when he was killing a Russian sniper team, one of the last survivors nailed him in the jaw with an exploding round. Instead of dying or retreating though, he killed the man who shot him, wiped out the rest of the team, and made it back to Finnish lines on his own.
Further adding to the legend is the fact that he slipped into a coma a few days after he got back to the hospital. In what was most certainly a coincidence (albeit a pretty freaky one) the Russians withdrew the day he awoke.
The Winter War was an example of how badly the gutted Russian command understood how to use the tools of modern warfare and how to fight a battle against a determined opponent, the climate was only a small part of it (Karelian units would have been easily adapted). Simo Hayha is an example of how one man can become a legend in this day and age.
Of course. Real life history is far more complex than what I could post on the internet.
But like you said, this isn't where I go on a diatribe about Soviet army political decisions, the double edged sword of communist propaganda, and tactical screw ups during the whole affair.
Simo Hayha... He'd make a stunning Archer. The fact that he hasn't yet been summoned surprises me, considering Nasu usually pulls out all the stops when it comes to Servants.
...Now I want to see somebody do a story where he's summoned. Because he's just that awesome!
He died in the early 21st century. Maybe ten or so years ago? No way is he going to wind up in the Throne, or as any sort of summonable spirit.
<NEW FIC!> Revolution #9: Somewhere out there, there's a universe in which your mistakes and failures never happened, and all you wished for is true. How hard would you fight to make that real?
[11:20:46 AM] GlowStiks: lucina is supes attractive
[12:40] Lace: lucina is amazing
[12:40] Neir: lucina is pretty much flawless
Emiya was summoned from the future though.
Emiya only became a heroic spirit because he made a contract with the World, though- and I think we can safely say that his merits were a decent bit better than Simo's. Emiya's kill count should be better, at least.
Well, would be an awesome twist, he got his skills in exchange for CG duty.
[04:55] Lianru: i3uster is actuallly quite cute
No matter how good you are with mundane weapons in this day and age, you can't become a Heroic Spirit. Kinda disheartening, but them's the way the cookie crumbles.
Maybe if you learn to bend bullets like in that one movie, you might have a shot. Otherwise go home.
Here's my contribution to this very interesting thread. She's my first Servant profile, so please critique as you see fit. I'm half surprised she hasn't shown up yet in either of the create-a-servant threads.

Weaving Princess OrihimeClass Skills:
Art piece © jurithedreamer @ deviantart
Orihime, Daughter of the Sky King Tentei, was said to be a beautiful woman who wove equally beautiful clothes by the side of the river Amanogawa (or Milky Way). Her father loved the clothes that she wove, and hence she dedicated much of her time and effort to weaving them. However, her father was very worried that as she spent most of her time weaving, she would never be able to meet and fall in love with anyone.
With this in mind, Tentei arranged for Orihime to meet with a man named Hikoboshi, a Cow Herder that lived on the other side of the river Amanogawa. When the two met, it is said that they instantly fell in love with one another, and married shortly thereafter. However, once married, Orihime no longer produced any of her beautiful clothes, and Hikoboshi allowed his cattle to roam everywhere across the heavens.
In anger at their negligence, Tentei forbade the two to meet, and to concentrate on their duties, flooding the river Amanogawa to separate them. Some say that Orihime became despondent at the loss of her husband and begged Tentei to let them meet again, tears streaming from her eyes. Moved by her daughter’s tears, Tentei allowed the two to meet once a year, on the Seventh Day of the Seventh Month on the Lunar Calendar, if both were to focus on their own work on other days of the year.
However, when it came to the fateful day that the two lovers were allowed to meet, they found that the river Amanogawa had no bridge that they could cross to meet each other. In sadness once again, Orihime cried and cried at the banks of the Amanogawa. While the two knew the other was waiting on the other side of the river they were not allowed to embrace each other. That is until a passing flock of birds (most well-known being Magpies) heard Orihime’s sorrows and spoke with her.
The flock of birds, after hearing her plight, promised to find a way to let the two lovers meet on that day every year. And from that time onwards, on the Seventh day of the Seventh Month on the Lunar Calendar, the birds would build a bridge across the river Amanogawa using their wings to allow the two lovers, Orihime and Hikoboshi, to meet.
This same day that they were allowed to meet, has been converted into a Japanese festival known as Tanabata. It is also said that if it were to rain during Tanabata, then the river that separates the two lovers would flood and become too wide for the birds to make a bridge. In the stars, this legend is shown by the stars Vega and Altair, representing the spirits of Orihime and Hikoboshi respectively being allowed to meet on the day.

-Item Construction Rank A
This skill reflects Orihime’s weaving ability attributed to her within the legends. It is sometimes said that the cloth that Orihime weaved was actually the Milky Way itself, hence the high rank. Due to her legend, this skill can only be used by Orihime to weave magical cloth, whether protection or otherwise…
The cloth she weaves can be imbued with a single skill that is normally reserved for Servants, or imbued with a single offensive or defensive property, allowing her and her allies to fight her adversaries using varied tactics. Only one piece of clothing she weaves can be worn by a person at a time, although the cloth themselves, depending on the ability she’s imbued them with, can sometimes be left alone to do their work against an unsuspecting Magus or Servant. A list of possible skills she can weave into her cloth include, but are not limited to:
-Presence Concealment (Max. Rank C)
-Bravery (Max. Rank B)
-Clairvoyance (Max. Rank C)
-Harmony (Max. Rank D)
-Mystic Face (Max. Rank B)
-Stat rank-up (Up to 3 rank-ups in any stat combination)
If the cloth is torn in any way (doesn’t apply if said cloth was imbued specifically with defence or offence in mind), it will immediately lose the skill it was imbued with. Caster must also pay a small cost in prana to weave a piece (amount is reduced if weaved in her workshop, with the rank of the skills that she can imbue her cloth being determined by the amount of prana she consumes in weaving it), and maintain a slight prana flow to said cloth piece for it to retain its skill. She may activate or deactivate the prana flow, and hence the skill, as and when she wishes.
-Territory Creation Rank B
Creation of a magical territory that amplifies one’s abilities as a magus. At this rank, creation of a “magic workshop” becomes possible.
Orihime worked tirelessly on the banks of the Amanogawa river, weaving cloth/the Milky Way for her father. As a result, the ‘workshop’ she creates gives her a peace of mind and ability to weave her cloth even faster, and for less prana cost to both create and maintain. While in her territory, she may also control the movement of any piece of her woven cloth from afar, using it to bind her enemies or ensnare them in mental traps. Otherwise, she can only control cloth that she holds, or is in contact with, directly.__________________________________
Personal Skills:
-Divinity Rank B
The level of divinity present in the Servant’s blood. At this rank, the Servant has the blood of a god within them, but not directly.
Legends speak of Orihime as the daughter of Tentei, the Sky King, or possibly the Universe itself. Orihime’s high rank in Divinity is meant to reflect this blood that resides within her. Also, every year her presence in the night sky as the star Vega, alongside Hikoboshi’s star Altair, is celebrated on the festival known as Tanabata, which has roots both in China and Japan.
-Animal Dialogue Rank A
Animal Dialogue is the ability for the communication of intention with animals that don’t speak a “language of words”.
The legends of Orihime and Hikoboshi speak of a large river that separated the two of them on the sole day that they were allowed to meet. Upon seeing the divide that separated the two lovers, as well as Orihime’s sadness, a flock of Magpies spoke to Orihime, promising her that they would build a bridge across the river with their wings so that she could cross. The high level of this skill reflects her ability to communicate with the birds in the legend, allowing them to construct such a complex structure like a bridge.
-Field of Detection Rank B
Detects presence of others within a particular distance. Combined with Presence Concealment, this ability is optimal for reconnaissance. At this rank, the Servant can sense presence of others faintly in the Area she is in.
Although separated by the Amanogawa river, Orihime was still more than capable of discerning Hikoboshi’s presence on the other side: A fact that pained her to no end when she realised she could not cross the river to meet with her lover on the single day of the year they were allowed to meet.__________________________________Noble Phantasm:
A Maiden’s Life’s Work: Heaven’s Cloth
Type: Anti-Unit
Rank: A
The cloth that Caster weaves is sometimes said to be the very fabric that makes up the Milky Way. As a result, the cloth she weaves has the capability to take on an appearance like that of a starry night sky, as well as the ability to bind her foes with the strength of a vacuum, as though they were being physically sucked into the cloth. With enough cloth activated, she can almost literally trap an enemy in the void of space, and kill them if they are trapped long enough. She may activate this ability in any cloth she has woven as and when she chooses for a limited time at a medium prana cost depending on the size of cloth she is activating, allowing for a large variety of possibilities to a cunning Magus. But once activated, the cloth that was activated will lose all of its abilities, and henceforth cannot be used by Caster.
Orihime and Hikoboshi: Two Star Crossed Lovers
Type: Passive Support
Rank: C (?)
Orihime’s representative star in the night sky is Vega. And Hikoboshi, her husband’s representative star in the night sky is Altair. As long as the night sky, and hence the two stars, are visible to her she gains a + in her END, AGI and MGI stats at no prana cost. This Noble Phantasm represents her tireless work in weaving cloth for her father, in the hope that on the Seventh Day of the Seventh Month of the Lunar Calendar, her father will allow Orihime and Hikoboshi to meet. Such a skill can be negated if the sky is cloudy or rainy, or if she is taken to a location where the sky is not visible (A reality marble or if she is drawn into an enclosed building with no windows to see the sky are two examples where this Noble Phantasm will lose its effect). A ‘fake’ night sky where she can see those two stars is also enough to activate this Noble Phantasm, as in the case with a Planetarium.__________________________________Caster’s Wish:To be able to live with her husband Hikoboshi throughout the entire year, instead of only being allowed to meet for a single day.
why would that be? its not like its th elegend of your weapon that makes you a heroic spirit, its your own legend. sure your weapon itself cannot be an NP if it nto legendary, tu there are more than enough NP#s not based on the weapons themselves, like Iskander's, whose NP's are his Chariot and his Army.
also as for the "summonign servants from the present" thing, wasnt it staed a bunch of tiems that servants are outside of time? Rin also said when explainign to shirou what sber is, "heros from the past or the present". so i guess it might even work if the servant you wanna summon is still alive. its just the matter that the more well-known the heroic spirit's legend is currently, the stronger/easier to summon he/she is, so someone who is still from this time or near this time just has a harder time beeign a servant in this time because their legend isnt yet as well-known and exaggerated as those of the older heroes.
which would create the interestign question if a Hero could summon himself.. but i guess that would be too much of an asspull.
A variety of reasons:
Modern weapons can be used by anyone, not like uber special years of training old age swords and spears. They are pretty lame in comparison to the old age weapons, unless you're getting into nuclear weapons or something which aren't used by a single person anyways. Modern people are also a lot weaker than people from an older age. Legends and myths are also less prominent in the modern age, since communication has advanced and people don't tend to worship a modern guy who does something amazing. Most importantly
This.
hm btu in the context of the nasuverse; i#d have to disagree with it; im sure Kiritsugu is not the only one with a mystic code in the shape of a Modern Weapon, and those can only be used to their full potential by their holders inthis case, right? also they are pretty amazing. and really any magically enhanced modern weapon would e rpetty amazing and depending on the magic used not exactly usable by anyone..and like i said, i dont see why a heroic spirit would be chosen solely dependong on the type of weapon they use. what if, for example, during a war between two super-nations who fight over a poor country full of, lets say, oil,, a single soldier deserts both freind and enemy and instead turns to help the villagers and people of the coutnry who really suffer from it. maybe he is an amateur magus too, or got to own a special magic weapon/magically enhanced modern weapon which assists him in taking down the troups that interfere with his self-imposed mission of rescuing the residents of the coutnry who dont have any other way of defendign against the overwhelming enemy. that would be pretty dammn heroic, and he would surely be idolized by them and turned into a national hero or idol. his weapon would qualify for the basis for an NP too. (this is basicaly the concept for a Servant from the future i was plannign to use in the story i planned to write before the motivation to write it was defeated by the lazyness and its arguments " i have other stuff to do".)
..god my writing is messy, i apologize for that. i tend to type kidna fast which results in typo's. i know that, but i still do it, shame on me
